About Tom
Hi! My name is Tom and I am currently awaiting my graduation for Biomedical Sciences BSC from the University of Surrey. I have a passion for STEM subjects as well as some practical applications previously within a pharmacy, and have been previously tutoring for 3 years. I have an 11+ pass, 8's in GCSE Biology and Maths and 7 in Chemistry. A-level results include A in Biology and B in Maths! I personally enjoy tutoring, the sharing of knowledge and understanding is vital to the growth of anyone at any age as knowledge truly is power! I really love when someone finally has the moment where it all clicks into place and is super amazing to see the transformation of the confidence of a student over a couple of months. Alongside this, I remember what it was like to be in that position, as I was there less than a month ago! Exams and grades are a stressful time where the uncertainty of the future can overwhelm you with a sense of dread, but hopefully I can help alleviate that!

My main focus when teaching is breaking down whatever problem or concept we are studying into smaller, more digestible bites, then slowly reintegrating and connecting these easier sections together to fully understand the matter at hand. For maths, this includes a more fundamental look at why and how certain methods of solving issues work and understanding the logic behind it, so the student can implement this into problems within the paper. For the sciences, I believe learning bit-by-bit is the most effective way to understand concepts and such, instead of attempting to learn a complex system all in one go. Each of the sciences is a demanding topic with a wide range of systems, ideas and equations which can be a lot to understand in one go. Learning section by section and starting at the fundamentals is an effective way to understand anything convoluted in my experience. Previous experience of mine is mostly from in-person tutoring, however over the COVID-19 I effectively switched to zoom/teams meetings, where I have continued to teach children from my hometown and surrounding areas. 3 years of work which paused over my studies, however I believe my degree has armed me with more capability to educate. I truly enjoy tutoring, being able to pass knowledge on and watch students get their desired grade fills me with pride and joy, and I hope to share that with you!

Tom taught my boy a few years ago now, and was able to bring up his grade by 3! Maths went from a 5 to and 8, and his combined sciences did well! Tom is very relaxed and good with kids, and helped my usually nervous son overcome his exam fears. All the best Tom!
