About Niall
Having been a professional musician playing saxophone, flute and bass in jazz, rock and pop bands since graduating, I began tutoring in the Sevenoaks area in 2014, teaching 1-1 as well as classroom for Kent Music and have one year’s experience as a secondary music teacher. I worked as a learning mentor in a local primary school for 18 months from 2014 giving me good experience working with children with learning and behavioural needs. This background, along with having my own children, has helped me inspire, motivate and encourage others through music.
In my short time as an instrumental tutor, my students have achieved grade 8 on saxophone, grade 5 on flute, and grade 5 on classical guitar. I am also a Lindyhop (1930s-1950s) dance teacher, teaching mainly adults and occasional children’s workshops for (concealed information)
I was extremely pleased to be nominated for Instrumental Teacher of The Year at The Music and Drama Education awards 2024 which saw me attend a dinner and awards at The London Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square in February.

An introductory lesson will asses the student’s ability and ‘where to start’. Children generally begin using a beginner’s book with structured lessons learning how to read music. Within 8-18 months (depending on length of lessons and commitment from student), this will follow on to grade exams set by Trinity, ABRSM, Rock School or RGT. Adults often choose a slightly different path and request to learn a favourite piece or favourite sax solo rather than sit exams. After grade 3 (or a similar level of playing without sitting exams), the student can opt to study improvisation alongside improving reading skills.
The weekly lessons will explore the various aspects of learning an instrument with the intention of joining groups, ensembles, orchestras, wind bands and jazz bands either for pleasure or as a career choice. A student studying jazz/improv can be accompanied by myself on piano or guitar during lessons and will have various recorded band parts (bass, drums and piano) on CDs or an iPhone app to practice along to at home. I like to make lessons fun and enjoyable as well as being able to improve the student’s ability level during every lesson.

Perfect! Amazing tutor, highly recommeded
Perfect! Niall brings a refreshing approach to saxophone tuition - applying his professional performance expertise to quickly introduce the student to simple but interesting blues riffs, quicker than one could imagine. Highly recommended tutor !
