About Elena

I'm a linguist from Russia and I believe that learning any language is possible (and super enjoyable!) once you have the right type of motivation and confidence in your knowledge. And that's what the focus of my lessons really is - to make you want to return to our lessons again and again and... in other words, completely fall in love with the language.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Russian fluently because I am Russian and have spent 22 years of my life there. I still talk to my family members and friends in Russian, and I am obsessed with Russian literature!
  • Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I feel that Natasha Rostova is the perfect representative of Russian culture (Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace). She is brave, kind, respects old traditions, and values family and peace above everything else. She is truthful and not afraid to apologize or admit her mistakes. Additionally, Leo Tolstoy himself is a great representative of Russian culture (just look up his photos!).
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I love the Maslenitsa tradition-everyone goes outside, celebrates, dances, sings, and spends time together in unity. I love the pancakes Russian people make and the tradition of burning the straw dummy of Maslenitsa. Also, New Year's Day is a very sacred and special Russian tradition, starting with emblematic dishes and ending with putting the ashes of your wishlist into your champagne! It's a truly magical time.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Because it's the language of my family and childhood-it's my whole identity. I am proud to be Russian, and I really want to pass all the traditions down to my children. Traveling to Russia makes me extremely excited and nostalgic! Russian culture is immense in its richness. Anyone who explores it in depth will inevitably fall in love with it-I can guarantee that.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

I feel that Russian cases are the hardest part. Every Russian word has about 6-10 different endings depending on its meaning, which can be really confusing and discouraging to memorize. However, you should never get discouraged or give up when faced with a challenge! Dedicate more time to it, find as many associations as possible, revise the rules often, and take lots of practice tests. Practice is key. As we say in Russian, "repetition is the mother of learning."
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Russian schools and teachers are no joke! Russian kids have to understand and use cursive, which is extremely hard. Once, a teacher gave me a B- just because I connected two cursive letters incorrectly! I remember how hard it was to memorize all the cases of Russian numbers and how I used to stress syllables in words incorrectly. So don't get discouraged-Russian kids have it hard as well! And our teachers are absolute bullies, lol.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I picked up many interesting (and fancy) Russian words at a college in Novosibirsk and during my travels to Saint Petersburg. Most Russian writers come from Saint Petersburg, so I highly recommend visiting and exposing yourself to everyday conversations with the locals! Saint Petersburg is truly the city of philosophers and great thinkers.
  • What makes you a Superprof in the language?

My passion for the language and the fact that I'm a native speaker. I try to view the language through my students' eyes and see it from their perspective. I know Russian is hard, so I bring lots of songs and cartoons to my lessons. I also love coming up with weird associations-they really help you memorize words once and for all! For instance, the Russian word дура sounds like the Spanish word for "hard," but it means "a stupid woman." You're welcome!
