About Alden
I am a graduate of Yale University (B.A.) and the University of California (M.A.). I am an established composer and teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area; I taught a wide variety of subjects at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, until my retirement. Currently I teach theory privately and group lessons for the Golden Gate Philharmonic, a youth orchestra in San Francisco. Their director wrote this about me: "We are fortunate indeed to have a musician with his outstanding training and varied experience. He is patient and thorough in his teaching." I have recently received the Distinguished Educator Award from Young Maestro International Competition.
My interests range from current work in electronic and instrumental music to late Medieval music, and everything in between! One student sent me a note after leaving for college; at the end he said "Please accept my sincere thanks for four wonderful years, from which I have learned what music is really like, and, more importantly, what a dedicated, sincere, patient teacher is like as well."

I have long experience working with students both young and not-so-young, native English speakers and not, beginners and advanced. Music brings us joy, and I think learning music should be a joyful experience too. Boring is bad! So I bring a variety of approaches to your unique situation: we listen, we sing, we learn the terms traditionally used in music, we look "under the hood" at any music we're studying to see how it was put together, and we talk about the historical context of the music. I prefer to teach remotely (via Zoom); in person in my studio in Oakland, CA is also possible. Get in touch.
