About Wendy
I have done many things in my life. When I left teaching English, I bought a horse farm and boarded other people's horses, rode my own and worked in my neighborhood to take care of and extend the large system of horse trails in my village. I helped to found a land trust here that preserves natural woods and the horse trails for residents' enjoyment. I also worked as a copy editor at our local newspaper, trimming stories and writing headlines each day. I often act as the secretary in organizations I belong to. I have travelled to Russia eight times and love the people. I am sad that I probably will not be able to go there again. But I have found great fun in working with two Ukrainian ladies to improve their English so they can become citizens and I can also use the Russian I am studying with a local university professor.

English spelling and pronunciation are confusing. When I am tutoring people new to English I use some general rules for recognition and pronunciation each time the person is struggling with how to say a word.
To know whether a vowel is long or short:
1. If two vowels are together, usually the first is long and second silent Beat, load, lie,
2. Without the second silent vowel the first is short bet, lot, lid so the second vowel is needed even if not pronounced
3. A vowel followed by two consonants is usually short and often not related to one with two vowels: lead (long), led (short), letter (short);
bait, bat, batter; maid, mad, madder; ruin, run, runner
New and young English learners are often puzzled by an "e" at the end of a word that is not pronounced. They want to pronounce it.
4. The purpose of the silent final"e" is to make the vowel before the consonant long
strip, stripe; bait, bat, debate; maid, mat, mate
5. A double vowel is usually long seed
Another confusing element is silent "gh"
6. The "gh" also makes for a long vowel
Sight, site, sit (short); Might, mite, mit (short) Again the words are often unrelated so that it is important to know how to spell them.
(The "th" words have to be learned: though, through, thorough, enough--yikes!)
When there is a pronunciation problem, I write the word and cross out the silent letters to show what sounds are left to say.
After a couple months they begin to catch on that this happens over and over and they can recognize these configurations.
