About Elijah
I am an avid language learner who has been studying Latin for 9 years and Ancient Greek for 7 years. I am familiar with three different textbooks commonly used for teaching Latin (Lingua Latina, Wheelock's Latin, and Learn to Read Latin) and Learn to Read Greek for Greek. I can work with students at any point in their language learning journey (vocab, syntax, morphology, scansion, etc.), and help students read poets like Vergil, Horace, Catullus, or Euripides, or tackle prose passages from the likes of Livy, Cicero, or Thucydides. Understanding ancient languages should not be like solving a puzzle, and I intend to help students see languages as they were written and read in the ancient world.

I can work with students of any (middle school, high school, or college) level in Latin and Greek. For beginner students, my philosophy is to impart to them as much familiarity with the grammar, morphology, and syntax of the language as possible, and then exercise this familiarity with real Latin and Greek that they can digest. Even students with little experience can read certain passages from Cicero or Caesar if they possess the correct vocabulary and grammatical knowledge. For intermediate and advanced students, I often find that mistakes arise from gaps in fundamental understanding, which I can help fill. In the case of new subject material (such as the subjunctive mood or different uses of the accusative case), I think it is often best to refer to English examples, or reexamine the origin of the grammar in question.
