Find out more about Rabeea

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

From a young age, I aspired to become a teacher and would often playfully assume the role while teaching my siblings. However, after completing my studies, circumstances required me to begin working to support myself, which led me to take up teaching. What began as a necessity gradually evolved into a genuine passion, and over time, I developed a deep appreciation and love for private tutoring.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach a range of subjects, including Science-covering Physics, Chemistry, and Biology-as well as Maths and English. My particular passion lies in Human Biology, which I majored in and have been closely engaged with for the past 7 to 8 years. I thoroughly enjoy discussing topics related to the human body with my students, as they often lead to insightful and engaging conversations. Interestingly, during my own school years, I was less inclined towards Chemistry and Physics. However, through consistent teaching and the opportunity to revisit these subjects from a different perspective, I have gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for them over time.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

During my O Levels, I was fortunate to have some of the most inspiring teachers, who played a pivotal role in shaping both my academic journey and personal growth. They cared for me with genuine warmth and guidance, often feeling like second mothers. The way they approached teaching-breaking down complex concepts into simple, understandable parts-left a lasting impact on me. Many of the techniques and methods they used have remained with me over the years, and I continue to pass them on to my own students, who find them equally helpful and effective.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe that being a good tutor requires a great deal of empathy. It is essential to understand a student's emotional state during lessons and to be perceptive enough to read their body language, as these cues often reveal how they are truly feeling. Establishing open and age-appropriate communication is crucial for building trust and creating a supportive learning environment. In addition to emotional intelligence, a tutor must also possess strong subject knowledge and the ability to deliver lessons in a clear and engaging manner, ensuring that the student not only understands the material but is also able to retain it effectively over time.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I have many fond memories of my school days, and while there may not be one particular anecdote that stands out, what I remember most vividly is the consistent encouragement I received from my teachers. I didn't have many friends at the time, so it was truly my teachers who made school a place I looked forward to each day. Their frequent praise for my hard work and dedication played a significant role in building my confidence. Their support not only motivated me to excel academically but also helped shape me into the person I am today. It is this experience that continues to inspire me in my own teaching journey.

A recent event that stands out took place a few months ago during a trial lesson I conducted with a student through Superprof. After the session, I had a conversation with the parent, who expressed not only their satisfaction with my teaching approach but also shared a particularly heartwarming compliment. They mentioned that hearing their child's spontaneous expressions of understanding-such as the "ohhhh's" and "ahhhh's"-was incredibly reassuring. It gave them confidence that their child was genuinely grasping the material, and it strengthened their trust in me as a tutor. Feedback like this is both encouraging and deeply fulfilling, as it reaffirms the impact of creating clear, engaging, and student-centered lessons.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the challenges I continue to face, even after several years of teaching, is the sense of concern and stress I feel when a student struggles to grasp a particular concept. It can be disheartening at times, as I am deeply invested in their progress. However, with experience, I have learned to manage these emotions and have trained myself to remain calm and patient. I now view such moments as opportunities to approach the concept differently, adapt my teaching style, and find new ways to make the material more accessible and engaging for the student.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching has always been my passion-whether consciously or unconsciously, it has been a consistent part of who I am. I genuinely enjoy the process of sharing knowledge and guiding others, regardless of the subject. Over time, I've come to realise that I naturally possess the ability to explain concepts in a way that others can understand, and this makes teaching not just a profession for me, but something I truly love doing. The joy and fulfillment I experience through my work reaffirm that teaching is, indeed, my calling.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I believe what makes me a Superprof is the level of dedication and personal investment I bring to each student's learning journey. I take the time to understand their individual needs, adapt my teaching methods accordingly, and ensure that they feel supported every step of the way. My commitment goes beyond simply delivering lessons-I strive to create a positive and encouraging environment where students feel confident, motivated, and inspired to achieve their best.
