Find out more about Cian

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

English is my first language, but the passion I have for it-particularly its literature and creative potential-was truly ignited by a handful of excellent teachers who encouraged exploration and expression. Their ability to make language come alive in the classroom has directly inspired the way I now teach English myself.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For me, Seamus Heaney stands out as an emblematic figure. His ability to capture Irish identity, emotion, and rural life through the English language is both powerful and poetic. His writing bridges cultural history and personal experience-qualities I try to help students appreciate in their studies.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I love the phrase "to find your voice." It's so indicative of what language learning is about developing the confidence to express yourself, not just clearly, but authentically. It also speaks to my teaching approach, where I encourage students to grow in confidence through written and oral expression.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

English is a global tool for communication, creativity, and connection. It matters to me because it opens doors-not only academically and professionally, but also in understanding others and expressing who you are. As a teacher, I see the value in helping students harness its power for their futures.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

English's irregular spelling and vast vocabulary can be challenging, especially for non-native speakers. What helps is engaging with the language in varied, practical contexts-reading widely, having meaningful conversations, and getting feedback in real time. In my tutoring, I make use of real-world material, exam-focused techniques, and needs-based instruction to make learning both accessible and relevant.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I remember preparing for my own Leaving Cert English exam-writing countless essays, many of which were far too long and too off-topic! A supportive teacher showed me how to focus my arguments more clearly and trust my own interpretations. That moment changed how I approached both study and teaching: precision and confidence matter more than volume.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Teaching English abroad in Palermo, Italy and working as an academic tutor at a summer camp in Canada gave me a broader understanding of how English is used and learned differently around the world. These experiences deepened my appreciation for the diversity of English learners and reinforced my commitment to inclusive and adaptive teaching.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I bring a unique blend of academic knowledge, international experience, and personal dedication to every lesson. Whether supporting a Leaving Cert student with comparative essays or helping an ESL learner master pronunciation, I tailor my teaching to the learner's goals. I focus on confidence-building, critical thinking, and exam success-while keeping learning dynamic, respectful, and engaging.
