About Kathryn

My music journey started at primary school when I first picked up a clarinet, working my way through grades and learning a great amount about the culture and history of classical and jazz music, discovering music I now love. This then took me through a wonderful adventure of learning how to play popular and rock music through various rock and jazz bands, and classical orchestras throughout my college course, and later a degree in classical and popular music. This then allowed me to pursue my teaching career that even took me around the world! During my time at university, I began private teaching woodwind and theory to all ages, alongside this I took great joy in helping with school productions each year by helping and playing in the band pit. After completing my degree, I moved to Moscow to teach woodwind at the International school. I learnt a lot about how music is taught differently around the world, thank you to the wonderful mix of students I had the privilege to teach. I have since come back home to the UK and completed my PGCE/QTS, now having the pleasure of working in a variety of schools in my local area, as well as connecting to online students across the globe. I have learnt a lot along my journey so far, and continue to learn every day, and I would like to now share what I have learnt, and help everyone I can to begin or continue their musical journey, discover their musical interests and passions, and get them to where they want to be!

About the lesson

All levels of music education covered, including GCSE, IGCSE and A level. To me, music lessons should be what the student wants them to be. If they want lessons just for the fun of music, to focus on technique and have more structure, or if they would like to work towards grades, and everything in between! As music teaches more than just an instrument, it can also teach a language, art form, history, even valuable skills that can be used in everyday life. No matter your aim, my aim is to make lessons as fun and engaging as possible, as music is also fantastic for building up confidence, independent and group skills, and can open the doors to creating friendships with like-minded people.

Kathryn gave me music theory lessons while I was studying for a 2nd year OU module in Music Theory for my BA Music. I was struggling with some of the course work and Kathryn did a wonderful job of simplifying everything.
I cannot recommend Kathryn enough as someone to clarify the mysterious world of music theory.

I've known Kathryn for a couple of years or so. In this short space of time Kathryn has taught me to read music, play piano and I'm now learning to play the clarinet. It's all been a pleasure. I'm now an 85 year old, sometimes irascible old man, who has never-prior to Kathryn-had any musical training. Kathryn has been a patient, inspirational tutor and I'm sure my ancient brain has benefitted.
