About Farooq
I am an experienced secondary school mathematics teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). I have 35+ years experience as a tutor, 12+ years as a teacher and 5+ years as an Examiner. I teach GCSE and IGCSE Maths, Science, Statistics, Accounting and Business Studies for OCR, AQA, Edexcel and CIE. For 'A' Levels, I tutor in Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics for Edexcel, AQA and OCR. I have experience teaching to individual students, to small groups and to classes of up to 35 students. I have worked with students ranging in age from 5 years to 60 years. I have a BSc (Accounting), PGCE, MSc (Mathematics Education) and am a qualified ACCA.

I care deeply about teaching and learning in general and the teaching of mathematics is a particular passion for me. I help students gain confidence in their own mathematical ability when they have been convinced by the academic system that they are incapable of doing well in the subject. I can also help higher attaining students to challenge themselves and aspire to become even better. I normally offer sessions online now. I am able to travel a limited distance for in-person sessions but there is an extra charge for this. My first session is provided free of charge and I use this session to understand the needs of prospective pupils. At the end of the session, I have a frank and honest discussion with the pupil and/or their guardians. I use these conversations to listen to the concerns of the pupils and/or their guardians and present an outline of my assessment of the student's areas of strengths and weaknesses. I also suggest a course of action to help the pupil move forward. During the last two decades I have worked with many hundreds of students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level. I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week. It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. I also believe in linking the mathematics that we study to the real world to increase students' engagement with the topic and their understanding of its relevance. I am very patient and empathetic to my student's needs and once they develop in confidence I encourage all my students to challenge themselves regularly.

Farooq tutored both my son for A level and my daughter for CCSE maths. We tried a few tutors before settling on Farooq. Although Farooq was quite a hard task master in terms of the actual tutor sessions and follow up work, both of our children made great strides forward in maths and never complained when it was Farooq day, even though some sessions were an hour and a half. Farooq really knows his stuff and concentrates not just on the technical, but also on the practical in terms of scoring the absolute best mark in an exam scenario. It also helped that Farooq himself is a super-nice guy. He was always punctual and extremely professional. I have no hesitation recommending Farooq; you will not be disappointed.
Farooq is an excellent tutor. He is thorough and encouraging. He helped my son get a 9 in GCSE Maths and an A* at A level. He has also been a mentor and role model.

We found Farouk when my son, Will was preparing for the 13 plus entrance exam. I was in a panicked situation as Will was getting around 45% in maths when it was only a few months away from the exam.
After the first meeting with Farouk, I immediately felt very assured that my son was in good hands. My son also gained confidence very quickly and he was very comfortable with his teaching style. Throughout his middle school period, I kept Farouk to tutor Will and he has maintained as a top maths student and received grade 9 in this year’s GCSE result.

My standard online rates are: £50 per hour for a single student up to Year 11 (£20 per additional student) £60 per hour for a single student in Year 12 and 13. £70 per hour for a single student at University. There is an additional £20 charge for in-person sessions.
