About Yan
Since I was young, I have always had a great passion for teaching. Going back to my childhood, I was always the one playing the role of the teacher teaching all the other children with chalks on the wall. I naturally chose Teaching English to Speakers of other languages as my first degree when I was in China and started teaching professionally right after graduation in the UK. Through teaching, I love to see how students grow their knowledge and most importantly learn with interest and fun. It’s an asset I can pass on to them and bring a difference to their life. Especially being a mother myself gives me the advantage of being kind and patient towards children's education and always deliver the lesson with a lot of love and understanding.

My experiences in teaching Chinese are really diverse. I was awarded a Higher Education Teaching Certificate in China in 2007, and started teaching Mandarin to speakers of other languages in 2008 after completing my postgraduate study in Education in the UK. Currently, I work within Higher Education in Central London, and in a local Chinese School teaching Mandarin to students aged 5 to 18 years old. I also teach privately on a one-to-one basis. Also, I had previously co-founded a Chinese School in Cyprus teaching Mandarin to students of all levels, from beginning to intermediate, and of all ages from 10 to even pensioners. I offer simple and interesting Mandarin sessions for all levels, beginner to advanced, one-to-one or in groups. Currently, I am using YCT - Youth Chinese Test standard course book for School teaching but I also design my own course materials and lesson plans for each individual lesson. It's a lengthy process as it can last between 2 to 3 hours depending on the need; however, I am committed to being the best for my students and meeting their needs effectively. I appreciate that taking up Mandarin as an additional language may sound very challenging, especially for beginners; however, I make sure each of my lessons is very well prepared and structured, fun-packed with all kinds of learning activities and easy-to-access resources. After each lesson, I give tailored feedback and homework for students to practise and further strengthen their language skills at home. For assessment, I use in-class reading, listening, writing or speaking tests and end-of-term tests. All my students have received very good grades so far.
