About Sarah

I am a qualified Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, neuroscience researcher and university tutor, currently teaching on a doctoral programme at the University of Exeter.

My professional background brings together clinical practice, academic teaching and research. I have extensive experience working as a psychotherapist across NHS and private practice settings, alongside postgraduate training in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches and postgraduate study and research in neuroscience.

Teaching at doctoral level has given me experience supporting students to engage critically with complex theoretical and clinical material, develop their own thinking, and communicate sophisticated ideas with greater clarity and confidence.

My particular strength is helping students make connections across disciplines. Psychology, psychoanalysis, neuroscience and clinical practice are often taught separately, yet some of the most interesting questions emerge at their intersections. I encourage students to think critically about different perspectives, evaluate evidence and develop their own well-supported arguments rather than simply learning information for an assessment.

I understand that even highly capable students can sometimes feel overwhelmed by complex material, academic expectations or the process of translating their ideas into writing. My approach is supportive, rigorous and non-judgemental. Sessions are tailored to the individual, whether you need help understanding a difficult concept, critically evaluating research, developing an academic argument, planning an assignment or dissertation, or connecting theory with clinical practice.

As both a practising psychotherapist and university tutor, professionalism, confidentiality, clear boundaries and respect for the individual are central to the way I work.

My aim is not simply to help students achieve academically, but to help them become more confident, curious and independent thinkers.

My approach to tutoring is collaborative, thoughtful and tailored to the individual. I aim to help students not simply memorise information, but develop a deeper understanding of psychological and neuroscientific ideas and become more confident in applying them.

I adapt sessions to each student's learning style, academic level and goals. Depending on what you are working towards, lessons might involve breaking down complex theories and research, exploring clinical or real-world examples, critically evaluating academic papers, developing arguments, or working through the structure and thinking behind essays, assignments and research projects.

My background allows me to bring together different perspectives. I am a qualified psychoanalytic psychotherapist with extensive clinical experience and a background in psychology, alongside postgraduate study and research in neuroscience. This means I can help students think across psychological, psychoanalytic, clinical and neuroscientific perspectives rather than treating these areas as entirely separate disciplines.

A typical lesson is 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged where appropriate. At the beginning, we will identify what you would most like to achieve and use this to develop a focused and personalised approach to our sessions.

I can support students with areas including:

• Psychology and psychological theory
• Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theory
• Neuroscience and the biological basis of behaviour
• Mental health and clinical concepts
• Critical thinking and understanding research papers
• Research methods and interpreting scientific literature
• Essay planning and developing academic arguments
• Dissertation and research-project guidance
• Connecting theory, research and clinical practice

My lessons are particularly suited to undergraduate and postgraduate students studying psychology, psychotherapy, counselling, mental health, neuroscience or related disciplines. I can also work with trainee therapists and other professionals who want to deepen their understanding of psychoanalytic, psychological or neuroscientific concepts.

My aim is to create a space where students feel able to ask questions, think critically and develop their own ideas. Rather than simply telling you what to write or think, I help you understand the material well enough to develop a clear, confident and independent academic voice.
