About Kae
Hi! My name is Kae and I use they/them pronouns:) I have an interdisciplinary background that has given me experience writing and editing a diverse array of material. I've also worked with a diverse array of students and writers, from elementary school students to mid-career adults. Over the years, I've gained a great deal of experience working with students who are autistic and/or ADHDers, emphasizing working with their strengths and finding supports and accommodations that can help bring out their best work.
Academically, I got a BA magna cum laude major in English and Classics(concentration: Latin and Ancient Greek) with a minor in Biology from Rutgers University in 2018. During my degree, I held several jobs, including research assistant at a biology lab, newsletter editor for the school's honors program, editorial assistant at Rutgers University Press, and writing tutor. I also volunteered to run a free dance program for three years. This gave me experience in writing and editing and tutoring a wide variety of styles, including academic writing, creative writing, poetry, advertising copy, professional writing, and technical writing.
After graduating, I started to work in healthcare advertising for 5+ years, gaining further experience writing for multiple audiences and supervising new writers. I gained additional experience advocating for my needs as the first out and vocal transgender person at my company during this time, developing my ability to use writing for self-advocacy and activism. While working, I volunteered with 826NYC, helping tutor students in grades 3-8 in writing and reading as a volunteer. During the pandemic, I also opened Little Free Library where I had multiple events consulting with families on how to get their kids to read more so I could help provide the books to do so.
Currently, I am pursuing a dual Masters degree in Social Work and Public Health. I work in a lab specializing in workplace safety and accessibility, primarily helping with research and writing. Additionally, I am completing a social work practicum at Tech Kids Unlimited, a non-profit that specializes in teaching neurodiverse students professional skills.
In addition to my extensive experience with research, reading, writing, and editing, I have experience volunteering with the Trevor Project for a year as a crisis counselor and facilitating several support groups, primarily for LGBTQ folks, which I use to create a safe environment for all students.

My lesson plans adapt to student needs, but all are based on breaking down concepts and projects into smaller components so they are easier to understand moving forward. Reading and writing for school can be overwhelming, so breaking things down into understandable pieces enables students to make the connections already present in their work/understanding. I can provide a plethora of resources, examples, and corny jokes/metaphors to aid students understanding throughout. As a neurodivergent social worker-in-training, I put a special emphasis on making lessons accessible to students, whether that's through engaging with their interests, using tools like text-to-speech apps when helpful, and developing strategies to work with any learning difficulties so that they can find a way to engage with and love reading and writing in a way that works best for them. Most of my experience is with middle school, high school, college students, and working professionals as an English/writing tutor, but I have experience working with students as young as eight as well.
My tutoring sessions are a safe and affirming space for LGTBQ+ students and operate from an anti-racist, anti-oppressive lens. When needed, I am more than happy to provide support and advice for advocacy in a school or professional environment or help students find resources to support them in difficult situations.
