About Kelly
I have spent over six years helping students find joy and healing through a deeply personalized connection with the violin. I hold a Doctor of Musical Arts in Violin Performance, but my actual teaching style goes far beyond traditional classical training. I believe in a holistic and therapeutic approach to learning music that focuses on self-expression, emotional release, and storytelling.
In my studio, we use the violin as a gentle tool for mindfulness, stress reduction, and building overall mental well-being. We often combine physical violin playing with simple improvisation, personal journaling, and creating relaxing soundscapes to encourage personal growth. I specialize in working with neurodiverse learners, trauma survivors, and adult students who are seeking comfort and healing through music.
For instance, I recently taught an adult student who was incredibly stressed by work and had given up playing years ago. Instead of practicing strict classical scales, we focused on slow breathing and improvised simple melodies to match their emotional mood that day. This process allowed them to release built-up tension and slowly rebuild a beautiful, loving relationship with their instrument.
I make sure our lesson space is completely safe, encouraging, and free from any pressure or harsh judgment. I truly believe the violin can be a safe and powerful tool to help you discover your inner voice and find emotional connection. My teaching methodology focuses heavily on fostering creative freedom and spontaneous musical expression on the violin. We will explore exciting subjects like improvisation in non-classical styles including jazz, folk, and world music. You will learn how to build your own beautiful melodies over chord changes and develop a unique improvisational voice.
This creative approach works wonderfully for church vocalists who want to play moving solos and stage actors looking to add dramatic flair. I remember coaching a church singer who was terrified of playing a solo without sheet music in front of people. We practiced playing simple three-note patterns over a basic background track, and they quickly learned to play by feel.
Soon, they were creating soulful, improvised lines entirely on their own during services. I am completely dedicated to pushing my students to trust their own musical intuition and supporting them in excelling. We will break down complex scales into friendly, bite-sized patterns that make sense on the fingerboard.
This step-by-step practice helps you transition from overthinking the technical rules to feeling the music in your body. We will work together to unlock your inner jazz or folk fiddler and make your violin feel like a true extension of yourself.
