I give instruction in beginning and intermediate saxophone, clarinet, flute and jazz piano and can draw on a traditional classical approach or work from a less formal jazz pedagogy for students of all ages. I help students develop an effective practice routine, proper tone production, and technical facility in addition to effective sight reading, rhythmic accuracy and stylistic interpretation skills.

Perfect! Charles asked questions that helped identify my goals. He quickly assessed a few things that already helped me improve! I'm really excited to learn more.
- Michelle grasped basic concepts of new material quickly and demonstrated ability to apply them in the lesson. She definitely has playing potential and I look forward to developing it with her.Charles's response :
Perfect! Very fun guy to get to know and very encouraging as someone who has never picked up an instrument. Excited to keep learning
Perfect! My son enjoyed his saxophone lesson with Charlie very much!
- Danny is definitely off to a good start on his saxophone journey. He has control of his sound and reads and counts well for his age and experience level, so we have immediately been able to start addressing musical concerns and not spend too much time on technical matters.Charles's response :
Excellent! Charles is a good tutor he gave me some suggestions that are very useful.
- Milly really just wanted a better understanding of the use of clarinet in her composition for class. She's not interested in taking actual lessons on the instrument.Charles's response :
Perfect! Charles is patient, kind and very knowledgeable. Always has constructive suggestions when I am in need of how to master a technique that I am struggling with. Whatever instrument he's playing, his heart for the music radiates from his countenance which makes studying music ( in this case the clarinet) with him fun and exciting. I'm thankful to have found him to teach me how to play the clarinet. I look forward to every lesson.
Excellent! Charles was very helpful but my internet connection was bad and we could not conduct the lesson as we expected. Charles has rescheduled my lesson so that I can get a better internet connection.
Perfect! Really enjoyed my first lesson and looking forward to learning new jazz skills for piano!
- Gina already has a solid skill set regarding knowledge of jazz chords and progressions which will be of great assistance in helping her develop a system of voicing and adding color and depth to the harmonic texture.Charles's response :
Perfect! Really nice and patient teacher. English is my second language and very poor with it. Mr Charles super patient and easy to understand.
- Rickey and Lulu are a winning combination! She already gets a good characteristic sound on the saxophone and is working diligently to learn to read music. Rickey has some musical experience and helps translate what information I am giving in the lesson. We are working as a team to make sure Lulu continues her good progress!Charles's response :
Perfect! After reviewing the profile of multiple teachers, I chose Professor Charlie and am so pleased! As a Cardiologist and medical missionary, I have the privilege of meeting thousands of people around the world. Professor Charlie is skilled, patient, kind, personable, and sincerely cares for his students. There are professionals who are experts and well-versed and those who are caring; Professor Charlie has both attributes in one! In just two lessons, I have improved significantly...thanks to his outstanding instruction and careful attention to detail. If you are looking for a competent, considerate, and caring mentor, who happens to be a class act, look no further! Dr. K
- Dr. Kosoglanian is really enthusiastic about his saxophone playing and practiced consistently for the lesson this week. His counting skills are strong and he supports the tone well; as his embouchure gets stronger and his articulation skills improve, he is going to sound great!Charles's response :
Perfect! Thoughtful and kind! Great first session!
- Amanda can read music well and has a good characteristic sound which will benefit by extending her range and getting more focus with the embouchure. Proper tongue placement will assist with cleaner articulation.Charles's response :

Charlie Jennison was my saxophone instructor at Phillips Exeter from 2007-2009. He guided me as a complete novice to the instrument in the fundamentals, and helped me develop comfort with playing. While I have not played in many years (and regret not continuing!), I am very grateful for his instruction and the life lessons learned through playing the alto sax. I highly recommend him as a trustworthy instructor. Thanks Mr. Jennison!
The best sax teacher anyone could ask for. Would give him ten stars if I could!
Charlie was my first saxophone teacher. I have known him many years. Charlie is an outstanding teacher, musician, and human being. I could not think of a better person to recommend for lessons.
