About Joe
I'm Joe, and the flute family has been at the center of my musical life for as long as I can remember.
Not just one instrument — all of them. The concert flute, the piccolo, the alto flute, the bass flute, the recorder. Each one has its own character, its own color, its own way of sitting in the music. And over the years I've developed a genuine relationship with all of them — performing across different settings and styles, exploring what each instrument can do in the right hands, and building a level of fluency across the whole family that I now bring directly into my teaching.
Most flute teachers specialize in one. I didn't want to do that. Because the more instruments in this family I explored, the more
I realized how much they inform each other — how understanding the bass flute changes the way you think about breath on the concert flute, how the piccolo sharpens your precision in ways that carry over to everything else. That cross-instrument perspective is something my students genuinely benefit from, whether they come to me focused on one specific instrument or curious about several.
I've worked with complete beginners who'd never produced a single note on a wind instrument, younger students discovering the recorder for the first time, adult learners picking up the flute after years of wanting to, and more experienced players looking to refine their technique or expand into a related instrument. All of them found something here that moved them forward. That's what I'm here for!

Every lesson starts with a simple conversation — what you play, what you want to achieve, and what's been getting in the way.
From there we build a plan that's specific to you. Not a generic program pulled off a shelf, but something designed around your instrument, your level, your goals, and the music that actually excites you. Whether you're working on the concert flute, exploring the warmth of the alto flute, tackling the intensity of the piccolo, or just starting out on the recorder — the approach adapts completely to what you need.
Here's what stays consistent across all of it:
Sound comes first. Before anything else, we work on producing a tone that's open, clear, and expressive. Everything — technique, range, articulation, dynamics — builds on top of that foundation. Rush it and nothing else holds together. Build it properly and everything else follows naturally.
Breath is everything on these instruments. We spend real time understanding it — not just as a mechanical thing, but as the actual source of expression and control. Students who understand their breath play differently. Better, freer, more musically.
Technique is taught in context. Scales, fingerings, embouchure work — all of it connects directly to the music you're learning, so nothing ever feels like it exists in isolation.
We work on repertoire you care about. Whatever style draws you in — classical, folk, contemporary, whatever it might be — that becomes the vehicle for your development. You'll always be working toward something that feels meaningful.
And progress here is tangible. You'll leave every session knowing exactly what improved and exactly what to focus on before we meet again.
The flute family is one of the most expressive corners of the musical world. Whichever instrument brought you here — let's see how far we can take it.
