About Celina

Having graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music, one of America's top music schools, I moved to Toulouse, France in 2018 to continue my studies in the organ. I have played the piano since the age of three and have been offering piano lessons since 2012.

In 2012, I began giving lessons to 19 students in my hometown ages 4-15; I was then a piano teacher for students at Oberlin College from 2015-2018. I have worked at two music summer camps, where I taught piano skills courses, private lessons, and coached students in their daily practice. Formal piano pedagogy courses have strengthened my skills in teaching, as well as psychology courses and studies. I am passionate about the way that music works in our lives.

I believe that music is one of the most engaging tools for building and realizing character. It is my job, as a teacher, to help students to unlock their inner detectives, archaeologists, and problem-solvers, by taking apart a piece of music and using the markings to figure out what the composer is attempting to express. The ultimate question that I ask myself during each lesson or class is “How does the way that I teach this concept affect the relationship my student has with music?” It is my goal to make music something positive in each and every one of my students’ lives.

I assign my students repertoire that they are interested in; however, achieving a stylistic balance is something I find important for a developing student and aim to expose my students to a variety of genres. The development of a healthy technique is also important, for technique provides the foundational tools to create beautiful music. However, I always believe the music comes first, which is why when I assign technical exercises, I continue to find ways to use these technical exercises in a way that challenges and questions the student musically as well.

When most people think of technique, the immediate image that comes to mind is of finger dexterity and virtuosity. However, technique encompasses so many other aspects of piano playing, such as voicing or left hand accompaniment patterns, and these technical aspects will be specifically addressed in the repertoire assigned to the student. The foundation of a healthy technique is relaxation, and when I teach technique to my student, the underlying question I try to get them to ask is, “How can I exert the least amount of effort to play this?” Eliminating tension in a student’s playing not only sets them up for success in more advanced pieces, but also drastically improves their sound, which is why relaxation is my first priority in teaching technique.

Even more essential than technique, I believe, is the development of a good ear. I enjoy exposing my student to both improvisation and ear training in order to help them listen to their own playing and to others’ playing. Oftentimes students get caught up in reading the notes on the page but do not listen enough to what is coming from their fingers. Improvisation off of a specific image or idea causes them to think critically about how they are creating their own sound. Additionally, playing a certain passage several different ways and asking a student which has the most appealing sound and asking why also causes them to develop a better ear. This critical attention to sound is something that is important for development as a musician, and especially important as a student begins to self-evaluate and make their own independent decisions about how something should sound.

I will take on any intermediate or advanced student that I have room for in my studio who has the motivation to further their musical skill, will commit to daily practice, and come prompt and prepared for lessons. Although strong technique, reading, and listening skills are all important aspects of my lessons, my ultimate goal is to teach my students to become independent and critical thinkers: to develop an understanding and love for not only the music written on a page or heard in a recording, but also the music that they, themselves, are able to create.
