About Elizabeth
I’m Elizabeth Lee, a Toronto-based cellist, concert curator, and dedicated educator with nearly two decades of experience performing and teaching. My early musical life included performances with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and appearances in Italy and Chicago—experiences that sparked a lifelong commitment to artistry, collaboration, and musical connection. I hold a Master of Music and a Performance Diploma from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where I was honored with the Artistic Excellence Award, and a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance with a Minor in Music Education from McGill University. A formative apprenticeship with the National Arts Centre Orchestra’s Institute of Orchestral Studies deepened my orchestral training and exposed me to inspiring conductors and colleagues early in my career. International performance highlights include chamber collaborations in South Korea, festival appearances in Europe and North America, and artistic connections with celebrated musicians such as Matt Haimovitz, the Pacifica Quartet, and Joshua Bell. I continue to perform in solo and chamber settings and to curate collaborative projects that bring audiences closer to the emotional core of music. While performance fuels me, teaching is at the heart of my work. I teach students of all ages and levels—from first-time beginners to advanced, audition-track musicians. My lessons balance technical clarity with imagination: strong tone, posture, bow control, and intonation are always paired with listening, musical storytelling, and expressive freedom. Many of my students prepare successfully for RCM exams, perform in recitals, and develop a confident, personal relationship with their instrument. I’d be delighted to support your musical goals—whether you’re starting fresh, returning after a break, or looking to take your playing to the next level. I’m happy to work with students across Canada and internationally. Current and former student/parent references are available upon request.

My teaching method is rooted in a balance of Suzuki philosophy and the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) curriculum to support technical growth, musical literacy, and artistic confidence. I guide each student through a thoughtfully sequenced journey: developing posture, tone, bow fluency, and left-hand facility—while also encouraging listening, creativity, and interpretation. Whether we’re building foundational skills or refining advanced repertoire, I aim to make each lesson both purposeful and personally meaningful. I frequently draw from the following resources, adjusting to each student's level and goals: * Suzuki Cello School (Volumes 1–7 * RCM Cello Repertoire and Etudes (Prep through Level 8 for reading and progression) * Scales for Young Cellists by Alwin Schroeder * Selected études by Dotzauer or Popper (as appropriate) * Custom materials for duets, improvisation, and imaginative exploration In addition to physical texts, I often share recordings, annotated PDFs, and visual tools to support home practice and independent learning. My goal is to help every student feel grounded in their technique while remaining curious, expressive, and connected to the music they’re creating.

We feel very lucky to have had Elizabeth as our son’s cello teacher for the past 12 years. He started at the age of 6, and while he didn’t pursue music as a major, I know her teaching will stay with him for life.
She doesn’t just tell him what to do—she explains things in a way that helps you truly understand the logic and physics behind technique and concepts. She knows exactly that one thing that completely transforms the playing. A few years into cello lessons, my son began picking up his cello to practice on his own.
Her lessons are structured, creating a clear sense of progress while still keeping the learning experience engaging and supportive.
I was also amazed by the annual recitals she hosted for her students, and how naturally she connects with students of all ages and personalities.
We are so grateful to have met her and cannot recommend her enough.
You will know. She teaches with a good spirit and a kind heart.Elizabeth is a wonderful cello teacher!!!
My 8-year-old daughter is loving her lessons with Elizabeth because they are fun and engaging. She is patient, kind, talented and she is passionate about her work. I would definitely recommend Elizabeth as a teacher if you are looking for someone who will motivate you and care about your technique and musicality.Elizabeth has been my cello teacher for over two years. I am a retiree with limited knowledge in music and know nothing about cello. Elizabeth is very patience with me and helps me in developing the fundamental techniques. She also helps me to constantly improve my bow techniques. She encourages me to use my ears to listen in order to play more in tune. She also encourages me to sign up for recitals and examinations to boost my confidence. Elizabeth has a sound knowledge in cello and she is a very good teacher. I highly recommend her as a teacher.
Elizabeth has been teaching my 8 year old daughter cello and piano for about a year now, and I can’t recommend her highly enough. She is a patient, kind, and encouraging teacher who truly understands how to bring out the best in her students. My daughter looks forward to every lesson — a testament to how engaging and positive Elizabeth makes the learning experience.
What I appreciate most is how Elizabeth balances discipline with joy. She has a wonderful way of explaining technique and theory while keeping lessons fun and inspiring. She’s also very professional, organized, and always communicates clearly about goals and progress.
It’s been amazing to see how much my daughter has grown in both confidence and skill under Elizabeth’s guidance. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a trustworthy, talented, and dedicated music teacher!I highly recommend Elizabeth as a cello teacher. As an adult returning to the instrument after years away, I was nervous—but Elizabeth made the process incredibly welcoming and enjoyable. She’s patient, encouraging, and adapts her teaching to your pace while still helping you grow. Working with her helped me reconnect with the cello in a meaningful and inspiring way. She’s truly fantastic to work with!
Elizabeth is an amazing teacher!
She pays attention to every detail, nothing gets overlooked. Her experience really shows. Every lesson I learn something new.
She’s super patient and won’t move on until you actually get it. She has this incredible eye for catching bad habits before they stick. That alone has saved me so much trouble.
But what I love most is how passionate she is about music. You can feel her genuine love for cello in every lesson. It’s contagious and keeps me motivated.
If you want a cello teacher who actually cares about your progress and knows what she’s doing, definitely go with her.View more recommendations
