I believe that the teacher needs to be an encourager of learning and not an inhibitor. This seems obvious, but there are many students who report that they have felt humiliated and discredited by their teachers. All due to the repressive and proud attitudes of these "professionals". Yes, you can learn! Yes, you are smart! But each one works in a different way. Each one has its own history and personality. To ignore this in the classroom is to fail before it even begins.
