As a math tutor, my approach leads to understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking. I prioritize building a strong conceptual foundation. Rather than focusing solely on memorization and procedures, I encourage students to understand why mathematical concepts work the way they do. I believe in active participation so I engage students actively in the learning process through discussions, interactive problem-solving sessions, and hands-on activities.
I know that each student learns differently, some prefer visuals why others prefer or notetaking. I tailor my teaching methods to suit individual preferences. I try to include mnemonics and real-life examples, or practical applications that help concepts seem more understandable.
Additionally, I provide constructive feedback and encourage students to reflect on their learning process. This helps them identify areas of improvement and develop a growth mindset towards mathematics.
My typical lesson plan includes a warm up activity, then I go over the learning objectives for the session and provide context for the topic we'll be covering. I present the main mathematical concept, breaking it down into manageable parts and ensuring students grasp the underlying principles. I demonstrate examples to illustrate how the concept is applied in various contexts. Students are then given opportunities to solve similar problems under my guidance.
