About Luke

While I grew up in the UK I have keenly chosen to throw my self towards spaces, cultures, and contexts far from my comfort zone: all this is done with a key feeling that studying and living are one and the same. As such, I have found myself studying in Munich, Germany, and, more recently, doing my masters in Victoria, British Columbia. I come to the situation of offering my tutoring services with a deep personal appreciation for the importance of of our surrounding environment when engaged in the activity of learning.

During my course of study in the UK and abroad, I have received scholarships, engaged in leading workshops for training prospective teaching assistants at the uvneirsity, helped with essay writing and presented at academic conference; one being a critical legal conference, the other being a conference dedicated to teaching assistants (TAs).

Looking forward, I am the lucky recipient, of four years of full funding for a masters of research and PhD at Queen Mary University of London to research the use of silence as a form of political participation by illegal migrant populations. Although I am a political science student, my present interest is in interdisciplinary thought (I have undertaken courses in English Literature, Social Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, alongside dedicated courses in interdisciplinary thought); as such, I am open to students of all stripes!

I offer my services related to any area of academic support, including but not limited to: essay writing, essay editing (grammatical, syntactical and argumentative), general academic praxis and more specifically topics related to the broad disciplines of political theory, international relations, social philosophy, pedagogy, and ethics. I am also more than happy to offer my services for ESL (English as Second Language) learners. I have received two certificates in recognition of my role as a teaching assistant and am deeply engaged with, and embroiled within, generating pedagogical praxis beyond the university or conventional educational setting. While I am a political science student, my present interest is in interdisciplinary thought (I have undertaken courses in English Literature, Social Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, alongside dedicated courses in interdisciplinary thought); as such, I am open to students of all stripes!

Lessons typically last from 1 to 3 hours as required; they are relevant for anyone at a GCSE, college or undergraduate level.

I am a prospective PhD student at the University of Queen Mary London and have just completed my Masters in Political Science with a concentration in Cultural, Social and Political Thought at the University of Victoria. I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Politics and International Relations the UK at the University of Exeter, with a year of study at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

During my time at university I have also acted as a graduate student tutor at the Centre for academic communication at the university of Victoria, as well as a teaching assistant consultant for the department of Political science, an International Teaching Assistant Consultant, as well as holding multiple teaching assistant roles in courses relating to EU politics, political theory, religion and politics, as well as introductory university courses to politics.

My philosophy to teaching is best understood as being concerned with giving students the space to realise that not knowing (fully) is the environment in which learning, understanding and thought begins. In this, mentoring and teaching is about creating a space in which one can be comfortable at the edge of one’s knowledge, how this edge of knowledge is where one actually begins leaning: teaching, for me, is orientated around making this space possible. This approach stems from experiencing that teaching is not something that can be directly imposed: properly, teaching is about creating a space and environment in which people learn in. Less abstractly, in the tutorial sessions it became apparent that while lessons could be orientated around providing definite answers, content, and information, this was not what pushed students into the frame of mind of thinking about the reason for their answers, about how they think and understand. Here, talking to students as a higher educational figure did not inspire understanding as much as it reinforced existing practices of memorisation: it reinforced preconceptions rather than opening them. This forced the realisation that teaching practice is about making possible a space in which students are given a chance not simply to build on their knowledge but to critique it and be creative with what they know; a space in which students are comfortable to be at the edge of understanding. In this, mentoring is about making a space in which it is natural to not know, in which you are neither completely lost or completely within your comfort zone. This situation is about educational equality, about students realising that teaching and learning occur in the same space where you must stand at the edge of what you do know to understand more. Here, my teaching philosophy work to provide a space that sparks thought about how answers are given.
