About Dugan
I started teaching piano lessons in 1997, and some of my best students have received high ratings in the NYSSMA music festival. I can provide testimonials from parents and previous students upon request. While not every student ends up wanting to continue playing after taking lessons, I do have many who have done so, and I am happy to have helped make that possible for them. I find teaching very worthwhile and enjoy guiding people to discover the joy of creating music.

Teaching method for beginners typically involves primarily the Bastien music book series but also include the John Thompson music instruction books.
Students are encouraged to learn note reading with the help of flash cards and to practice sight reading during lessons in real time. They also use scale and chord books that include two octave-scales and voicings of the primary chords.
Written homework is regularly assigned to reinforce practice at note reading and knowledge of music theory. If students don't have time to complete it as homework, we can work on it together in class.
Lessons are for beginners through early intermediate students. As students get more advanced the need for flash cards no longer exists and more emphasis is placed on actual playing of pieces. Students are encouraged to pick popular songs to work on, but some basis in classical music and jazz is part of the curriculum.
