About Samuel
I'm a teacher, pianist and composer; I hold Bachelors & Masters degrees in music from Canterbury Christ Church University, and am currently studying towards a doctorate in Music (Composition) at Royal Holloway, University of London.
I have been teaching since 2011. I believe that for students to flourish at the piano that they need to understand what they're playing, feel confident in their abilities, and above all else enjoy themselves.

My students are a mixed bunch. A large proportion are under-18s studying for grade exams or fun (or both!) - we learn the fundamentals of music & music-reading, and build their technique by playing in a variety of styles. I teach older pupils too - some are experienced players with 40+ years at the keyboard behind them, whereas others are taking their first steps (even first exams) on the instrument.
I have extensive experience of taking students through ABRSM, Trinity, and MTB Exams, as well as the recently-introduced ABRSM Performance Grades & Trinity Digital Exams; for those who enjoy this rigorous structure, I aim to provide expert guidance and support in negotiating the often anxiety-inducing(!) listening & sight-reading tests. My pupils often achieve exam results at Merit or Distinction level.
It's not all about academic achievement, though - the most rewarding moments as a teacher are those when a student really connects with what they're playing, and I try to create an environment in which this can happen. I often take requests for new music (surprises are very welcome!) and try to bypass barriers to enjoyment; I aim to integrate aspects of composition, theory and improvisation into everyday playing wherever possible.
Lessons take place in a studio in central Ashford, on weekday evenings; free parking nearby at Elwick Place, with provision available for tuition via Zoom. Lessons are priced at £16 per half hour.

I have had the good fortune to have Sam (Messer) as my piano teacher for a few years now. As an adult learner, taking up the piano in my middle age, I was not sure how I would get on, but Sam showed me that new skills could be learned and an instrument that I had always loved mastered to some extent! Sam makes the lessons fun, but always with a structured and methodical approach underpinning his teaching, so I get the benefit of playing and understanding the theory behind both the piano and music more generally. I would heartily recommend him as a teacher and thoroughly enjoy my weekly lessons.
