About Sam
I am pianist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, and teacher. I specialize in Jazz and Alternative Rock, Indie, Pop, and Hip-Hop, and am well-versed in many other genres such as Folk, Americana, and Blues. I perform with Nathan Tao, Stuart Blackie Quartet, Kristen Lynn & the Foxgloves, Lines N' Spaces, Vintage Noise, and Last Decade. I have played in the pit orchestra for countless musicals for theaters such as South Bay Musical Theater, Cupcake Theater, Children's Music Theater, and Lucie Stern Theater. I have also recorded on albums, most recently El Santo Del Valle's album "Vivo Yo."

I see the importance of sharing the lessons of music with other people and how much learning music can benefit people's lives. Some of my students have gone on to pursue music as a career and at university, while others have found it to be a great way to express themselves and learn a new skill outside of their career. I approach lessons with a student-first mentality. It is important to find out the student's interests and motivations in learning, as this will help guide the journey they will go through to learn to play. Someone who wants to play pop music may have different priorities than someone who wants to learn classical. However, there will always be fundamentals that apply to all musicians: having a healthy and efficient technique, learning the notes on the instrument, sight-reading, music theory, and ear training. I find it important to balance songs with etudes, exercises, and studies.

Guitar and ukulele have been on my wish list to learn and Sam has made the early stages of learning them a breeze. I was really worried that I wouldn't have the necessary skills, but he was kind and coached me through the hardships.
