About Hiren

I have been tutoring for thirteen years and have experience of all the major exam boards (AQA, OCR, Edexcel and WJEC) as well as entrance exams for the 11+ and 13+. I am also an examiner for AQA, OCR and CIE. I have a BSc degree in Physics, an MSc in Science Education and a PGCE in Science. I have five years' experience as a Head of Department in a large London secondary school and now work at an independent international school. I believe the most important aspect of tutoring is to stimulate interest in the subject - once this happens, the whole learning process becomes much easier! As an experienced school teacher, I have guided students through the UCAS process for ten years and would be happy to read and redraft personal statements. This may be of particular benefit for those applying to study Physics, Engineering and Medicine based courses. **Please note that I currently only have online slots available, and this will remain the case going forwards. This is due to me working in multiple locations and therefore being unable to commit to face-to-face lessons.** University : - University of Warwick - BSc Physics - University of Oxford - MSc Education (Learning and Teaching) - University of Leeds - PGCE Science Other Qualifications : BSc Physics MSc Education PGCE Physics

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I chose to study maths and science-based A Levels over twenty years ago and followed this with a Bachelor's degree in physics so I guess my interest in this field goes all the way back to my teenage years. I started tutoring as soon as I qualified as a teacher in 2009 and have tutored ever since then!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics and further mathematics up to GCSE level, and physics, biology and chemistry up to A Level. My favourite topic in maths is algebra and my favourites in the sciences are inheritance and variation, organic chemistry and electricity. There are not many subjects I dislike, but if I had to choose one, I would go with circle theorems in maths!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I believe anyone who enters the teaching profession does so with the intention of helping others, often for less pay and benefits than in other employment sectors. This makes all teachers everyday heroes in their own way, but every student has that one teacher who went the extra mile for them. Those are the teachers (and tutors!) that students will never forget.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Whilst excellent subject knowledge and the ability to work with students might seem like the most obvious qualities, I would say these are only helpful when combined with patience, wisdom and a good heart. If you find a tutor with all of these qualities, hang onto them.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember all of my science teachers in high school and believed they all cared about the students they taught. I remember being on a biology field trip somewhere in northern England and seeing a wild deer for the first time in one of the national parks. To be honest, growing up in the city I didn't even know that we had wild deer in the UK until this school trip!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I studied Physics at the University of Warwick which was tougher than I expected, but I graduated and went on to do a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status at the University of Leeds followed by a Master's degree in Learning and Teaching at the University of Oxford.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love travelling to other countries, and more specifically I love flying, aircraft and airports. I should probably have just said I like travelling but I see the airport/flying experience as an integral part of the travelling rather than simply being a way to get from one place to another! I have travelled to 43 countries and landed in or taken off from just under 100 different airports in my relatively short life. With more of a focus on climate change and sustainability in recent years, I look forward to travelling in more environmentally sustainable ways in the future.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I am an Oxford graduate who is also a qualified teacher and an examiner for two of the UK exam boards. I have tutored for over 500+ hours on different online platforms and 1000+ hours if we include all of my face-to-face lessons. I believe finding a tutor with all of these experiences is of great benefit to students.
