About Elana
Hi! My name is Elana and I’ve recently graduated from the University of Bath with a first class physics degree. I’ve had plenty of experience tutoring students in GCSE and A level maths and physics and I feel that my background in sports coaching as well as my science outreach dissertation project equips me well to deal with students of all ages and abilities.
As a female student in a highly male dominated field I can totally understand that science (especially maths and physics)! can feel daunting at times. I am passionate about working together with students to dispel this myth and make science more accessible and easy to understand. In my final year as an undergrad, I elected to take two educational psychology modules where I explored the impacts of the school science education system on student learning and the methods that teachers and tutors alike can employ to improve student understanding and ultimately enjoyment of science. I was awarded a first in both of thee modules and I feel that the research I undertook will not only serve to further improve my tutoring, but has also reignited my passion to help others to discover the true beauty in maths and physics.

My methodology often varies from student to student and is based on the individual student’s ability, aims and current understanding of the subject.
Initially, I will speak to the student to gauge what current issues they are having with the course. From personal experience and from working with previous tutees I find it more effective to try to get ahead of the course material wherever possible so that school lessons serve to consolidate tutorials. Not only does this reinforce what is being taught, it can also improve student confidence and engagement within lessons.
My lessons often consist of introducing and discussing a new topic followed by some worked examples for the student to attempt with my help when necessary. I will also set homework in the form of exercises with numerical answers provided so that students can mark their own work. Any questions regarding the homework can be sent to me via email at any time or discussed in the next tutorial.
