About Annabelle
I am currently undertaking a PhD in experimental nuclear astrophysics at the University of York, after graduating from my Masters in Physics with a first class honours in 2025 from York. I have also worked as part of a placement year at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory on MPGD detectors for neutron detection applications.
I have 6 years of experience in tutoring biology, physics, and maths students at A Level and GCSE level and have completed over 140 lessons. Many of my students have gone on to improve their grades to their target level, most recently with a student going from a predicted B to A in A Level physics following 12 sessions. My tutoring sessions will be planned out around the aims of the student. If there is a certain topic that they are unsure of, my priority is to break it down into simpler components; explaining the origins of any mathematics/physical concepts along the way.
I firmly believe practising past questions is the best way to improve, as it is a brilliant test of knowledge. I will aim for my students to feel confident approaching a question, whilst having a deeper understanding of the underpinning concepts that are to be applied. As a student myself, I find a topic being taught from several different perspectives to be greatly beneficial, because it is important to recognise that not everyone learns in the same way. This is why I cater for a student’s specific learning style and tailor the lessons to their needs.

As a dedicated Physics and Maths tutor for A-Level and GCSE students, my approach is centred around breaking down complex topics into manageable and understandable chunks. I begin by assessing each student’s current level of understanding, identifying their strengths and areas for improvement. Lessons are then structured to build on this foundation, ensuring that key concepts are solidified before progressing to more advanced material. I emphasise a deep understanding of fundamental principles, especially in Physics, so students can not only solve specific problems but also apply their knowledge to a variety of situations with confidence.
In my lessons, I encourage active learning by guiding students through problem-solving exercises. Rather than simply providing answers, I ask probing questions and prompt students to think critically, which reinforces their learning and helps them develop the skills necessary to tackle unfamiliar problems. This hands-on approach ensures that students gain a deeper comprehension and can independently apply what they’ve learned. To measure progress, I regularly set tailored exercises and past exam questions, analysing the student’s performance to identify trends and areas needing further attention.

Annabelle was my tutor during my first year as a physics student at university. She was always patient and took the time to explain concepts fully and find the best way to help me understand what I was being shown. Her teaching helped me with the transition to the first year of university and I would highly recommend her as a physics and maths tutor.
I have known Annabelle for over 10 years. She was a student at the school that I work at. She has tutored many students and is an inspirational teacher with an ability to tailor her teaching to the needs of each student individually. She has an excellent rapport with students to engage with them and keep them focused.
