About BIDISHA

I am a research fellow in theoretical physics with six years of research experience after PhD. I have genuine love and passion for Maths and Science. I try to spend a lot of my time teaching students because I really want to help and motivate younger people in developing the required scientific skills. My past students particularly mentioned that I have good teaching and communication skills. When I was little, I had a tough time grasping the ideas of Mathematics. However, I received the guidance of a couple of excellent teachers in my life who helped and inspired me to become a pro in Maths and Physics and without them I do not think I will be the person that I am today. I have seen that with commitment and hard work we are capable of achieving anything and everything in life. But the commitment does not come under peer pressure, it has to come from within. My teaching style is to inculcate the love and passion for Maths and Physics in a fun way and not under pressure. This way the students can excel in Maths and science in the long run. I believe this also helps shape their personalities to becoming kind and considerate human beings.

I am passionate about teaching and put my best efforts and enthusiasm to teach the students. I focus on developing clear understanding of the topics in Maths and Physics because these are foundational in life irrespective of the career path one chooses later on. In doing so I am always happy to explain the concepts multiple times if required. I recognise that every student is different and has different interests. Hence I provide physical examples and applications of abstract ideas and equations whenever possible. I encourage questions and comments from students as well as ask questions during the class to create an exciting interactive environment. I also do enough tutorial sessions with the students and actively help them in solving their homework/assignments so that they get super comfortable with the curriculum. I highly appreciate feedback from students to improvise on the teaching. The typical length of a session can be 1 or 1.5 hrs. I teach GCSE and A level Maths and Physics. My first teaching experience was during my PhD when I designed and delivered a set of informal undergraduate lectures on General Relativity and Black hole Physics at the Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. I delivered a lecture course on Conformal Field Theory for graduate students and postdocs at IIT Kanpur, India which primarily focussed on the development of the basics of conformal field theory with applications in string theory. During the final year of my PhD, I worked as a teaching assistant (TA) for a one-semester course on General Relativity for graduate students. My role as a teaching assistant involved checking students’ assignment solutions and explaining the correct answers in weekly tutorial sessions. I received excellent student feedback during this course and feedback comments particularly mentioned my good teaching skills during tutorial sessions. During my first postdoc, I was invited to deliver a nine-hour lecture course on scattering amplitudes for graduate students and senior researchers at the Indian Institute of Science. Additionally, I have delivered several journal club lectures on advanced topics in high energy physics during my PhD and postdoc years. I have supervised numerous undergraduate, masters and PhD students at the Southampton University in their research projects and this involved teaching lots of new concepts of Maths and Physics. I have also taught and volunteered for a social service club to promote education among underprivileged children in India.
