About John
Hi there, my name is John Pote! I’m a published scientist with a PhD in entomology and teaching experience at Michigan State, where I taught and assisted in multiple science and math-related courses. I’ve been tutoring since 2013, and every test-prep student I’ve worked with has exceeded their goal score. I bring deep subject knowledge, but also a jolly upbeat style that helps students relax, focus, and feel supported from the start. As someone with ADHD, I empathize with ADHD learners and specialize in finding strategies that genuinely fit the way they think. I focus on patient pacing, honest communication, and building the kind of rapport that turns frustration into confidence. I’m a former university instructor with a PhD in entomology, and a passion for helping people learn to teach themselves. I’ve spent years teaching and mentoring students and have worked with learners at every level, from middle school math and science to college coursework, SAT/ACT prep and the GRE.
As someone with ADHD myself, I understand how traditional study methods don’t work for everyone. I wasn't able to excel in my own education until I discovered my own learning style and I specialize in helping students with ADHD make that discovery. I try to help my students build realistic study habits, break down assignments, and find approaches that fit the way they think. My sessions are flexible, encouraging, and tailored to each student’s strengths and challenges.
