Profile
-----
I currently work as a private tutor teaching mainly Physics (A-level, GCSE, IB) and Maths (A-level, GCSE, IB), but I have also taught Science (GCSE, KS3) and Chemistry (GCSE). I'm also at the very end of my PhD in Electrical Engineering with Loughborough University, and graduated with an MPhys (Hons) in Physics with Theoretical Physics from the University of Manchester (amongst the highest ranked physics departments in the world). My research is in computational physics and engineering.
Besides my academics, I am a well-rounded individual having held various positions in mentoring, coaching, and leadership over the years. To name a few examples, I've mentored younger PhD students, been a volunteer teacher at a Code Club for primary school children, and coached basketball for mens and kids teams (as a qualified basketball coach), to name a few.
My tutoring style is predicated on a strong ability to break down complex topics, which I have honed over many years of academic study. However, over my experience as a tutor I've learned that inter-personal skills are just as important as the technical knowledge, sometimes even more so. I understand that effective communication is paramount, meaning well-structured sessions and a balance of teaching and practice exercises, in order for students to be able to follow along and develop confidence.
In my free time I enjoy playing basketball, running, and cooking. One fun fact about me is that I played in the under-10 national junior chess championships, although that was my peak and I only play for fun now!

I will be focused on helping the student achieve their goals, for example improving their grades, but also aim to help nurture their curiosity and talent.
My approach to teaching is based upon the idea that mastering fundamentals is key to learning more advanced topics, analogous to good bricks being the foundations for building a house. I approach my work with diligence and attention to detail, and continuously strive to break down complex ideas more simply, yet I try my best to balance it with a broader perspective and emotional intelligence. In my tutoring I try to communicate in an engaging and positive manner and am always trying to help lead the student, with a long term view of helping to develop confidence and critical thinking in students. Additionally, I'm a friendly and sociable person and can get along with anyone.
Online lessons will be conducted via Zoom.

Perfect! Andrew is a great tutor! He is friendly, calm, highly knowledgeable and has the ability to impart complex subjects in a clear, informative and succinct way to facilitate learning for Maths and Physics. He is building confidence in these subjects at A Level standard and we are extremely grateful for his support.
- They have been very good at communicating throughout and it has been a pleasure working with them. Their communication and attention during lessons make them easy to tutor.Andrew's response :

My daughter has been having physics tutoring (year 13) with Andrew for many months now and will continue to. Andrew’s really helped with exam technique, fully exploring various question styles and consolidating her understanding in certain areas. She enjoys her sessions and finds Andrew friendly and easy to work with.
Andrew is highly knowledgeable in math and science, with a strong technical background. He is patient, understanding, and sincerely dedicated to his work. His friendly and approachable nature makes him an excellent tutor, capable of explaining complex concepts with clarity. I highly recommend him.
I've known for Andrew for many years now as a friend when he was working on finishing his PhD. As it was of interest to me, he often explained to me his ideas and the theoretical concepts he was basing his work on. He was always extremely good at communicating complex ideas to me, who knows almost nothing about Physics, and whenever we have shared working space, I have always been impressed by the care, diligence and organisation with which he works. I have been giving him advice since he has started to do some tutoring of his own, and he clearly carries over this care for his work to tutoring, which I can tell from the breadth and depth of our conversations about teaching methods, finding suitable resources, and handling clients. I am a tutor with you (I work with Nelson mainly) and I recommended in the first place he apply to you, and did so with the confidence that he has the nature and personality of someone who would make an excellent tutor as his experience grows. I highly recommend him.
