  • 1) Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?

    I remember the first computer we had at home, it was probably 1994. It came in a big plastic box with a multitude of floppy disks. I remember my dad using our family computer for work and fun during his leisure time. I still feel that feeling, everything was new to me, the smell of the plastic, the keyboard, the monitor, and of course the whole experience of using it. It did not have any graphical interface, it was all lines of commands in this black screen that years later I surprisingly still use. I remember my dad wrote down on a piece of paper the list of steps I had to follow to launch my favorite games. That was where it all begins.
  • 2) What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

    Personally I really think smartphones, They had a great impact on my life and still nowadays sometimes I find myself thinking how cool and useful they are in our everyday life, especially for active and busy people as a tutor. They opened up a lot of fo opportunities to get to know with several apps that had and have been helping on many different aspects of my life, from leisure to work, knowledge, and productivity. Speaking of smartphones and their everyday life usage, I believe the augment really will mark a big leap forward.
  • 3) Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.

    I have not studied computer science, therefore I consider myself a user, even though for research and work I code and even develop small programs. I am interested in many languages and different packages, personally, I extensively use both Python and Matlab but I have 4 years of work experience with SQL and its similar languages. I truly believe that we are moving towards a more and more a civilization where coding is central in all aspect of life. By life I literally mean life, not working life. Therefore development and expertise in coding, no matter what is the language or the framework, will surely give someone a conspicuous advantage for the years ahead.
  • 4) Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?

    I am completing my PhD and I am an academic-oriented person, I have always found inspiration and motivation from greater scientists and thinkers, surely some of the so-called 'visionaries' are so and we all have a lot to learn from them.

    5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
    I tutor different subjects, which at first glance do not seem to be very related to each other, as a consequence the kind of experiences and anecdotes related to them are very heterogeneous. Many are funny and constitute good memories. I always like to think about my days at school compared to later stages of my life where, even though I have found myself learning something new, it was not in an educational path within a certain institution. I miss the feeling of being a student, sitting in a class, sharing the feelings, emotions, and destination of the journey with my classmates. That is something we need to cherish. Having good school memories is such an important treasure one would bring forever with him or her for the rest of the life. My goals therefore here is to make students confident and enjoy the learning process as much as they can to build good memories and humanity, besides good scores at exams.

    6) What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?
    I think the IT world is highly misunderstood by outsiders. I can see recently an effort by mani to communicate and educate the general audience towards computer science and IT in general. It is a natural process that takes time. After all, IT speaks its own language, it is an ecosystem of different languages and fields. It is the own world. I would recommend people to overthink but instead, focus on something easy and well defined. For instance, a Python package, getting familiar with what it is watching some video online and then start to practice it, with hands-on real projects, before you even realize one will be in the IT world, without even realizing it. Thing is never complicated, probably you are not looking at it too close as you should. The most complicated thing can be broken down into simple parts and after a while, with patience, the big picture emerges without even the need to be conscious about it. Yet, I would recommend some preferential channels such as Python, the language is intuitive and powerful, it is helping millions of people around the globe to become IT experts in a matter of monhts.

    7) What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?
    I am a photography enthusiast, I mainly shoot abstract photography. I also practice boxe and I like to keep learning online about science, coding, and social media.

    8) What makes you a Superprof in IT?
    I like to think that my hard work is what makes the difference. Being prepared and confident come with hard work and sacrifices but the benefits are life-lasting and the boost you gain in these two fundamental feature each good teacher must have, is enormous and it is fully transmitted to the student. My advice to new tutors is, therefore, to be prepared, as much a student would like to be prepared for an exam.
