About Hao

Hi, I am Hao.

I am a PhD candidate in Human-Computer Interaction at Swinburne University of Technology. I offer help to university, TAFE and beginner students with programming in Python, C++ and C#, and with game development in Unity and Unreal Engine. Our lessons can be in English or Mandarin. I also hold a valid Working with Children Check.

I built my programming skills through hands-on engineering work. After completing a master's degree in software engineering at Xiamen University, I worked as a research engineer at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where most of my work was software engineering. There, I wrote multimodal perception software in C# with Unity and connected several sensors to it to capture people's eye gaze, hand gestures, voice and facial expressions. I used this multimodal input to control robotic arms and mobile robots. I now also develop in Unreal Engine with C++. In our lessons, I draw on this experience so that we can look at how each concept you learn works in a real program.

I teach programming by starting from your own code. In Semester 2, 2026, I taught weekly C++ programming classes at Monash University. I wrote feedback on students' code to guide them towards their own solutions, and I then discussed the code with them in class to understand how well they had grasped each concept. As a teaching assistant at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, I taught Python tutorials and game design, and I received an Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. As a disability support worker, I now tutor a neurodivergent TAFE student one-on-one in Unreal Engine game development, and I plan each session around the student's pace and interests. We work the same way in our lessons. We look at your code together and talk through your thinking until you can explain each concept in your own words.

We start from your current level and what you need, and we work together until you can write your own code with confidence. You might be taking a programming unit at university or TAFE, preparing for VCE or learning to code for the first time.

Each lesson is 60 minutes, and we take one concept at a time. We first talk the concept through and try it out together in live code. Then we apply it to a new problem, with you at the keyboard.

If you study programming at university or TAFE, we work through the concepts in your unit together and practise structuring, testing and debugging code side by side. For assessed tasks, we unpack the task requirements together and practise the required skills on similar problems. If you enjoy games, we can build your own 2D or 3D game together, in Unity with C# or in Unreal Engine with C++, and you learn to program along the way. By the end of every game lesson, you have something new to play. For VCE students, we plan our practice around the Software Development units of the VCE Applied Computing study design and the VCE Algorithmics (HESS) study design.

We meet online by default. We can also meet in person in Melbourne's inner east, with a parent at home for students under 18.
