About Samuel
In addition to being a PhD candidate at UBC's department of English, I also hold two degrees (a BA and an MA) in English. I have over 15 years of experience working with students of various levels (both in discussion groups as well as privately) to help them master the essay form. Outside of academia, I am a published poet and a freelance journalist with over ten years of experience writing for magazines, newspapers, and literary journals. Also, my meme game is really strong.

Essay-writing can be a mysterious and frustrating task! In my years of teaching as a TA for English undergraduate classes at UBC, I've noticed that my students often struggle with the genre of academic writing—a problem compounded by university professors who expect students to already know the basics.
Over years of teaching in university classrooms, I've personally developed and refined a fun and accessible system for teaching the fundamentals of writing essays. I specialise in English literature, and would love to demystify close reading and literary analysis for you. At the same time, I am experienced at teaching academic writing in general, and have developed an approachable method to help you acquire tricky skills such as developing an original thesis, fleshing out an argument, incorporating secondary sources, and proper use of citations.
Whether you're a high school student who wants to get a headstart on prepping for college, or a university student struggling with her essays, I'm confident I can help you get better at writing. If you've ever found yourself dreading an essay deadline because academic writing makes you anxious, don't hesitate to reach out! Let's have a chat about how you can discover your confidence as a writer.

Samuel is an extremely knowledgeable tutor that truly cares about his students. He is patient and adaptable, with an ability to simplify difficult concepts. He is an excellent person to discuss ideas with, and the writing feedback he gives is always insightful. Working with Sam has made me more confident as a writer and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a tutor!
I’ve had the privilege of briefly having Sam as a teacher, as well as witnessing many of his interactions with his students here at UBC. Not only is he an extremely experienced and acclaimed writer and educator, but he also possesses a rare combination of insight, humor, and empathy that allows him to truly connect with his students. Exceptionally knowledgeable in the fields of literature, poetry, media studies, and creative writing, Sam is skilled at distilling information and providing clear frameworks to help students improve their work. I highly recommend Sam as an English teacher to any student, whether in university or high school— he’s one of the smartest, kindest, and most patient people I know.
