About Gerardo
I am a PhD candidate at Adelaide University. I have several years of academic and professional experience in chemistry and teaching at high school and university levels.
Originally from El Salvador, I excelled at math, physics and chemistry in high school, participating in national and international olympiads in these fields. At the age of 17, I moved to Japan, where I learned Japanese and completed my undergraduate and master’s degrees in chemistry at Nagoya University. After a few years working in chemical manufacturing, I moved to Australia three years ago to pursue my PhD.
I speak fluent Spanish, English and Japanese, and have experience teaching all three of these languages.

My motto is “adaptability.” As a lifelong learner myself, I will adapt my lessons to your goals and preferences. For example, if you are studying for a specific test, I will prepare a lesson based on your curriculum where we can address either the most important aspects of the test or the parts you are having difficulty with. Alternatively, if your goal is simply to become good at something, we can decide together on a path for you, and I will prepare materials according to your ideal way of learning: problems to solve, reading materials, or simply a discussion.
I have taught in different contexts: university-level chemistry labs, high-school chemistry, physics, and maths tutoring, and language courses for adults, among others. This has taught me that we all learn differently. I welcome people of all ages and levels to learn with me, and I will adjust my lesson length (45–90 minutes is recommended) according to your needs as well.

I have known Gerardo for years (he is my partner). While I have never been an official student of his, I have learned an incredible amount from him just by being around him and asking questions.
What I appreciate most about Gerardo’s teaching is how deep his knowledges go, while still making everything feel genuinely understandable. I can ask him something completely out of the blue like “How do clouds form?”, “What is surface tension?”, or “What is a proton?” and he will explain it in a way that is detailed but never overwhelming. He is great at meeting you where you are, using simple language, clear examples, and building the idea step by step so it actually sticks.
One of my favourite things is that he does not pretend to know everything. If he is unsure, he will happily look it up, or even better, we will learn it together. He has amazing big-picture thinking where he can connect puzzle pieces across topics and help make sense of things I would not be able to figure out as easily on my own.
A shared experience I still remember vividly is me asking how water manages to move through a tree, and Gerardo walking me through capillary action in a way that made the whole system feel understandable yet fascinating.
Gerardo has strong disciplinary knowledge, especially in chemistry and maths, but what really sets him apart is how he applies it to systems and real-world questions outside his direct field. He makes learning feel exciting, curious, and enjoyable.
I know I am biased, but he is the best teacher I know, hands down.View more recommendations
