About Bart

My name is Bart, I am 26 years old, and I have lived in Nijmegen all my life (almost).

I followed Mathematics B at VWO level, and then studied Artificial Intelligence at the RU. Mathematics is a large part of this study, where both the material of mathematics A and that of mathematics B is discussed. During my studies I was a teaching assistant for 5 different subjects, and before and during my studies I gave tutoring mathematics to VMBO, HAVO and VWO students, as well as to fellow students at the university.

I am not very pleased with the way mathematics is taught at school. Students have to memorize rules and learn to apply them, but why those rules are the way they are is often not explained, and the curiosity about them is often not answered, while it is precisely that curiosity that can make mathematics interesting. I have the feeling that this makes a lot of students think that math is not for them, and that is a shame. I therefore try, where I can, to provide context and answer questions that arise from curiosity.

More concrete: Furthermore, I will of course mainly deal with the question of a student / their parents. I usually discuss the material from their book together with a student, or I supervise the homework. The challenge for me is to translate the material from dry textbook language to a language that makes the material intuitive for a student. Preferably in such a way that a student does not have to remember the rules, but really understands and sees why it is obvious. What that language looks like is different for every student. Likewise, the extent to which it is feasible to fully understand it within the time we have.
