About Elena
Bienvenidos and welcome to my page! My name is Elena and I am an ambitious undergraduate student of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies at Birkbeck College.
I have five years’ worth of experience teaching English, Spanish and coding to children (with mamacodes.com). I started my teaching journey during on a 6-month trip to South America where I taught in Honduras, Ecuador and Peru to children and adults alike. Upon arriving back in the UK, I decided I wanted to explore teaching more as a career, so I volunteered with the charity Talking Together that provides free and informal English lessons to women migrants from war torn countries. This was a simple 12-week programme where I taught practical English, however the improvement in my students in this short amount of time led me to realise that teaching is such a satisfying career and something that I had to pursue.
After completing this course and doing a NVQ to become a teacher assistant, I began offering 1:1 English and Maths tuition for primary school children. It wasn't until a few months later that I focused on teaching Spanish and got my first Spanish GCSE student. My private tutoring business took off and I was teaching multiple classes a day (1:1 and groups to children and adults, beginners to advanced) and absolutely loving it! It was exhausted work sometimes, but seeing my students move 3/4 grades in the space of a year and smashing their predicted grades is the most incredible feeling! During this time, I was also supplementing my income through part time work with mamacodes.com as a teaching assistant.
Roll on 2020 and the start of the pandemic. Many of my students stopped classes with me due to job losses or a reduced time schedule (balancing work and kids). Because of this I created a profile on italki.com and got straight to work teaching English as a second language. I have been teaching on italki as well as doing the occasional Spanish lesson ever since. I love my work online teaching English, however I also must admit that I adore teaching Spanish - as a university student of Spanish and Latin American Studies, that is where my passion lies.
I would also like to reiterate that along with being proficient in English, I am also bilingual in Spanish as well as having an intermediate level of Portuguese and Greek. Growing up learning so many languages has taught me to be adaptable and equipped me with a range of verbal skills. Not only this, but my work as an English teacher has gifted me the pleasure of helping hundreds of people from all walks of life with all kinds of ideas improve their English level. Speaking with so many people has made my confidence and professionalism around clients increase drastically. I have learnt a lot in this time about how to hold engaging conversations and make the client feel valued, seen and heard.
Before teaching, I spent 5 years working as a host and coordinator for the massive restaurant chain Nando’s. I worked as a host, greeting customers, dealing with complaints, and finding solutions. I would just like to briefly mention my other hobbies and interests which include practising Reiki and belly dancing, studying empowerment astrology, devoting time to family, and spending time in nature to ground myself.
I live in the Twickenham area, however I have no problem commuting further out to students homes. Alternatively, you are very welcome to have lessons at my home, however I am still living in my family home, which during the day time is quiet as everyone is at work.
I cant wait to help you on this journey!

Elena is my 16 year old son’s Spanish tutor. I met Elena about 2 months ago. From the moment I met her she came across articulate, confident and friendly. I accepted her experience and knowledge of the Spanish GCSE curriculum and allowed her to tutor my son.
My son was definitely struggling with the Spanish language but in the short period of time Elena has taught him, he has gained a huge amount of confidence. He recently sat his Spanish speaking exam and was thankful for Elena’s assistance.
Elena is always on time however I have noted she is content on spending the extra time to finish tasks.
Her work ethic and her love of the language was noticeable at the outset. This has allowed her to take up the challenge of teaching a person who not only lacked the confidence but found the language difficult and generally disliked the subject.
My son has commented on the fact that Elena is always prepared and will come with material to use in the session. He finds there is no time wasted.
I have no doubt that my son will pass his Spanish GCSE exam and I am thankful for Elena’s approach and dedication.I have known Elena for over two and a half years now through a working relationship. In this time I have seen Elena grow in both confidence and ability. She is very hardworking along with being fun and engaging with staff and customers. She is great with people due to her strong personality traits which include being very trustworthy and honest. Elena has had no time off due to illness and is always punctual.
