Find out more about Afiq

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in tutoring during my degree years, when I often helped my friends understand complex topics. As the education level increased, I realized how challenging some concepts could be, and I found great satisfaction in helping others grasp them more easily.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach several subjects, including Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Science. For Mathematics in particular, I enjoy giving real-life examples to make abstract concepts easier to understand. I have experience teaching students from Primary to Foundation level.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes — my Additional Mathematics teacher, Cikgu Rohana, during secondary school. She was calm, patient, and always smiling. Her dedication and passion inspired me deeply. Even though the subject was difficult, she made sure every student understood the lessons completely.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must be creative and innovative in delivering lessons since every student learns differently. It’s also important to be a good listener and communicator — understanding students’ weaknesses, adapting to their learning pace, and creating a comfortable environment where they can ask questions confidently.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During an Additional Mathematics class in secondary school, I helped my classmates overcome their fear of the subject. By focusing on understanding concepts rather than memorizing formulas, I saw how their confidence grew — and that moment truly strengthened my passion for teaching.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One of the main challenges is understanding each student’s learning style. Some grasp concepts quickly but forget them easily, while others take longer to understand but retain knowledge for much longer. Another challenge is earning students’ trust — encouraging them to express their doubts openly so we can learn together effectively.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a strong passion for teaching subjects that students often find difficult. There’s a special joy in seeing them finally understand something they once feared. It requires patience, dedication, and consistency — but the reward is worth it every time.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I believe every student is intelligent in their own way. As a Superprof tutor, my goal is to help students discover their strengths and build confidence so they too can inspire and help others.
