About Josh
My love for sports runs deep, and I actively compete at a national level in hockey. Tennis has also been a significant part of my life, having played on the circuit during my junior years. My extensive background in coaching sports from a young age has provided me with valuable experience in working with children and bringing out the best in each and every one of them.
More recently, I have embarked on the TeachFirst program, where I discovered my newfound passion for teaching mathematics. I find mathematics to be a remarkably logical and, at times, even therapeutic subject. It's a source of relaxation once you've grasped the underlying concepts.
One of my primary goals as a tutor is to challenge and change the misconceptions that often plague mathematics, such as the belief that it's "boring" or "never used in real life." I am determined to transform these perceptions within my tutoring sessions. My mission is to make math not only accessible but also enjoyable, demonstrating its practical applications and real-world significance. Through engaging, interactive lessons, I aspire to inspire a genuine appreciation for mathematics in every student I work with.
In summary, I bring a blend of sportsmanship, coaching experience, and a newfound passion for teaching mathematics to my tutoring journey. My aim is to foster a positive and enthusiastic learning environment that not only helps students excel academically but also instils a lasting love for the subject.

In my tutoring sessions, I maintain a consistent and structured approach to ensure students gain a deep comprehension of mathematical concepts, refine problem-solving techniques, and cultivate a genuine enthusiasm for the subject.
Our lessons will typically follow this established format:
Interactive Learning: Together, we will navigate through illustrative examples, enabling students to grasp not only the mechanics of the technique but also its practical application. This serves a dual purpose: enhancing comprehension and fostering an appreciation for real-world relevance.
Precision in Presentation: I emphasise the significance of presenting solutions in the correct format to maximise their potential for obtaining top marks. Attention to detail in articulating mathematical concepts is crucial, and I guide students in achieving this proficiency.
Navigating Potential Challenges: We will address any potential 'banana skins' or stumbling blocks that may arise in similar questions. This proactive approach prepares students to tackle various scenarios effectively.
Following the exploration of these examples, students will embark on practice questions. We will collaboratively review their responses, ensuring a thorough understanding of the material.
Throughout our sessions, I am passionate about conveying the practical applications of mathematical concepts. This approach accomplishes two vital objectives:
Enhanced Understanding: Connecting mathematical principles to real-life situations enhances students' comprehension by offering tangible contexts for abstract concepts. This enables them to visualise and internalise the problems more effectively.
Igniting Enthusiasm: Demonstrating the real-world relevance of mathematics not only enriches understanding but also makes the subject more captivating. When students recognise how mathematics intertwines with their daily lives, their engagement with the content naturally intensifies. Moreover, this approach effectively addresses the common query, "When would I ever even come across this?"
In every tutoring session, my aim is to instil a profound appreciation for mathematics, harnessing its inherent beauty and applicability to empower students to excel in their studies while embracing the subject's real-world significance.
