About Dr Faez

I’m a biochemist with a DPhil (PhD) in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford and over 13 years’ experience tutoring school-level Maths alongside the sciences. I studied at Shrewsbury School, then Imperial College London for my Bachelor’s degree, before completing my doctorate at Oxford, where my research was published in leading scientific journals.

Maths underpins a huge amount of my work in Biochemistry and Virology, and over the years I’ve tutored students in Maths from early secondary up to A-level/IB – as well as supporting university students with the mathematical parts of their degrees.

I specialise in preparing students for all the main UK exam boards: AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC and CIE as well as IB Maths and Cambridge Pre-U. As a tutor, I’m calm, organised and very student-focused. I’m used to working with a wide range of learners from students who find Maths stressful and need to rebuild the basics, to ambitious students aiming for top grades and competitive university courses such as Medicine, Natural Sciences and Engineering.

My students and their parents often comment on:
● clear, step-by-step explanations of tricky topics
● patience and encouragement, especially when confidence is low
● thorough preparation and tailored lesson plans
● a strong focus on problem-solving and exam technique, not just “doing lots of questions”

Whether a student is trying to secure a solid pass or push into top grades, my aim is the same: strong foundations, confident problem-solving and sharp exam skills in Maths.

Many students feel Maths is just a list of methods to memorise – algebra, graphs, trigonometry, calculus without really understanding what’s going on.

In my lessons we make the subject clear, logical and exam-focused, so you understand why methods work and can apply them confidently in exams:

1. Build real understanding (not just memorising steps)
● Diagnose and strengthen core skills (number work, fractions, algebra manipulation, equations)
● Break each topic into a clear, logical story (e.g. why solving equations works, what gradients and areas really mean, how trig links to triangles and the unit circle)
● Use diagrams, examples and step-by-step explanations to make abstract ideas concrete
● Constantly check understanding with short questions and mini-recaps Once the core ideas click, new topics and harder questions become much more manageable.

2. Master exam technique and problem-solving
● Practise decoding exam questions and multi-step word problems
● Learn how to set out working clearly to pick up all available method marks ● Work through past-paper questions under realistic timing (including mixed-topic papers)
● Review answers against the mark scheme so students see exactly where marks are gained or lost

3. A typical 90-minute lesson

● Quick check-in on homework / previous topic
● Teach or revise one focused topic in depth (e.g. quadratics, simultaneous equations, trigonometry, calculus, statistics)
● Apply it to a carefully chosen set of exam-style questions
● Agree a short, targeted practice task for next time

For students close to exams, I also offer more intensive sessions to simulate real exam conditions and work through full papers with detailed feedback.

4. Free first lesson – planning & diagnostics In the free first session we:
● discuss goals (target grades, exam boards, university plans)
● look at recent schoolwork / tests / mock papers
● identify strengths, weak areas and any confidence issues
● put together a clear plan up to the exam
