About Dr Faez
I’m a biochemist with a DPhil (PhD) in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford and over 13 years’ experience tutoring school-level Chemistry. I studied at Shrewsbury School, then Imperial College London for my Bachelor’s degree, before completing my doctorate at Oxford, where my research was published in leading scientific journals.
This means I don’t just know the GCSE, A-level and IB syllabuses – I work with Chemistry and related sciences at a very high level and understand exactly how the school material builds towards real-world science and university study. I also myself have achieved A* for Chemistry at A-level and GCSE - so I truly understand what it takes to achieve top grades.
I specialise in preparing students for all the main UK exam boards – AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC and CIE – as well as IB Chemistry (SL/HL) and Cambridge Pre-U Chemistry.
As a tutor, I’m calm, organised and very student-focused. I’m used to working with a wide range of learners – from students who are really struggling with the basics and need Chemistry to feel less overwhelming, to ambitious students aiming for A/A* and competitive courses such as Medicine, Natural Sciences and related degrees.
My students and their parents often comment on:
● clear, step-by-step explanations of tricky topics
● patience and encouragement, especially when confidence is low
● thorough preparation and tailored lesson plans
● a strong focus on exam technique as well as understanding
Whether a student is trying to secure a solid pass or push into top grades, my aim is the same: deep understanding, sharp exam skills and genuine confidence in Chemistry.

Many students find Chemistry abstract and overwhelming – lots of symbols, equations and exceptions. In my lessons we make the subject clear, logical and exam-focused, so you truly understand it and can turn that understanding into marks.
1. Build real understanding (not just memorising methods):
● Break each topic into a clear, logical story (e.g. moles, bonding, energetics, organic mechanisms)
● Use diagrams, analogies and step-by-step worked examples
● Constantly check understanding with short questions and mini-recaps
Once the core ideas click, calculations and harder questions become much more manageable.
2. Master exam technique and mark schemes:
● Practise decoding command words and multi-step questions
● Learn how examiners expect calculations and explanations to be set out
● Work through past-paper questions (including multi-choice and structured questions) under realistic timing
● Review answers against the mark scheme so students see exactly where marks are gained or lost
3. A typical 90-minute lesson:
● Quick check-in on homework / previous topic
● Teach or revise one focused topic in depth
● Apply it to a carefully chosen set of exam-style questions
● Agree a short, targeted practice task for next time
For students close to exams, I also offer more intensive sessions to simulate real exam conditions and work through full papers with detailed feedback.
4. Free first lesson – planning & diagnostics
In the free first session we:
● discuss goals (target grades, exam boards, university plans)
● look at recent schoolwork / tests / mock papers
● identify strengths, weak areas and any confidence issues
● put together a clear plan up to the exam
6. Levels & exam boards I teach:
I teach Chemistry from early secondary (pre-GCSE) through to GCSE, IGCSE, A-level, IB (SL/HL) and Cambridge Pre-U, across all the main UK exam boards (AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, CIE). I’ve helped students move from struggling with the basics to achieving top grades and securing places on competitive courses such as Medicine, Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Sciences and Natural Sciences at universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL and King’s.
If you’d like Chemistry to finally “click” and to see that reflected in your grades – I’d be very happy to work with you!
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Dr Faez.
Perfect! Faez worked with a Year 12 student in the run-up to his AS Maths and Chemistry exams. Over the course of around four months, the student’s grades improved from Ds and Es to As and Bs – a great testament to Faez’s patience, clarity, and commitment.
I highly recommend Faez as a tutor for Maths and Chemistry. He is effective, results-driven, and also takes the time to understand each student’s individual circumstances and needs.- What we have covered:Dr Faez's response :
In Chemistry, we focused primarily on organic chemistry, including an introduction to bonding, families of organic compounds, naming, and isomerism. We also covered various types of organic reactions involving alkanes, alkenes, halogenoalkanes, and alcohols. In Mathematics, we have recently begun working on differentiation.
I want to cover topics in inorganic chemistry next, and also for organic chemistry, I would like to give exam questions that test abilities to connect different principles and what has been learnt in all the topics in organic chemistry. For maths, diving deeper on differentiation to test his understanding.
Suggested next steps
- Continue to utilise a questioning method to test understanding and encourage more active thinking.
- I plan to incorporate real-life examples to help cultivate a deeper interest in the subject that extends beyond the textbook.

Faez has been tutoring my daughter Ella in A-level Chemistry and Biology and has made a huge difference. She went from a C to an A in Chemistry and from a B to an A* in Biology.
He is extremely thorough and has a knack for explaining the trickiest topics in a clear, step-by-step way that finally ‘clicks’ for her. Her confidence has grown enormously and she now feels much more prepared for her exams.
Faez is punctual, well prepared for every lesson and very easy to communicate with. We have been extremely pleased with his tutoring and would highly recommend him to any student needing support in Chemistry or BiologyI know Faez as we're both doing biochemically-related PhDs at Oxford and also previously studied together at Imperial. He's not only super smart but also very lovely, friendly and kind. He'd make a great tutor!
Faez really helped me during my degree by tutoring me in Maths. He had a very good understanding of the topic and managed to explain complicated topics in an understandable way. I would definitely recommend him.
