About James
I have over six years of full-time tutoring experience, having started at a tutoring start-up before establishing myself as an independent tutor. I hold a degree in Maths and have a deep passion for the subject that I aim to pass on to every student I work with. My approach is built around identifying each student's individual gaps and building their confidence - I firmly believe that fostering a positive attitude towards Maths is the foundation for all further progress. I have experience across a wide range of levels, from GCSE through to university, as well as preparing students for admissions tests such as the TMUA, STEP and SAT. I also enjoy working with younger students who want to push beyond the standard curriculum through Maths Challenges and Olympiad preparation. I pride myself on being adaptable, tailoring my style to suit each student's needs, whether that means taking a structured lead or giving the student more autonomy over their learning.

I have worked as a full-time tutor for over six years - firstly at a tutoring start-up and more recently as an independent tutor. I have taught students mostly in Maths but also in coding - for Maths - I primarily teach GCSE upwards (GCSE, A Level, TMUA, STEP, SAT (US admissions), University level). I also work with students from 10 upwards who are looking to be stretched beyond the usual curriculum, through the maths challenge/BMO/IMO route, or for the youngest students through challenging problems suitable for that age I have collated myself.
I believe the most important thing I can help to build in my students is an optimism towards spending time doing Maths - as once this has taken hold it is far easier to start developing the other skills such as independent learning. My initial aim is to show them that by us focusing on the individual gaps in specific topics - we can move fast through the topics they have previously struggled with and bring their grade up accordingly.
In general, depending on the age and maturity of the student, I can either take charge in choosing which topics to cover when and set the student independent work, or the student can lead and choose which topics to cover in a given session (or perhaps somewhere in between). Specifically, with the TMUA, STEP and SAT (for US college admissions) - as these by their nature are quite different in style to the Maths they cover in class - they tend to be better suited to me taking more of an active lead for all students (but again this can vary).
I find that hour-long sessions tend to work best for most students, but some students prefer longer sessions (particularly for the university level exams).
