About Joe
Hi, I'm Joe, and I can't get enough of maths and philosophy!
In fact, I'm a recent graduate in Mathematics and Philosophy from the University of Oxford, where I turned that obsession into a double 1st class degree, winning prizes for exam performance in both subjects. I am at my very happiest when I have the opportunity to share the fascinating ideas that both subjects contain.
When it comes to maths, the way it's taught at school can be a bit mind-numbing; often you feel like you're learning to be a calculator, not a mathematician. That kind of rote learning approach can make maths come across as a very boring subject, when nothing could be further from the truth - maths is exciting and alive. Even worse is that in practical terms, it isn't even the best way to do well at maths exams; having a proper understanding of why maths works the way it does is the key to success. I can offer just this sort of grounding in proper mathematical thinking, and show you just why the maths you'll be studying is actually extremely exciting.
Philosophy is a vibrant and fascinating subject which can have a profound impact on the way in which you think about the world, or possibly even on how you want to live your life. I can offer guidance in your philosophical studies, helping you to discover which arguments and debates are really worth thinking about, and I can help you to develop a questioning and inquiring mindset which everyone ought to have, not only philosophers!
I am used to making complex ideas approachable, having experience with projects in maths communication - I have given talks at Oxford summer tuition camps on various parts of maths, set fun assignments to go along with them, and produced audiovisual content and articles about the wonderful world of mathematics and its intersection with philosophy. I'd love to give you a tour of those worlds, too!

Joe is an exceptional student who scored one of the highest marks across Oxford University for Maths and Philosophy. His teaching is also excellent, as demonstrated when he worked with me to present a series of lectures and workshops for a summer school on the Millennium Prize Problems for 16-24 year olds. He is very thorough in his working and explains concepts with great clarity. He also demonstrates a high level of patience with students and is able to adapt the pace to best fit with the student's ability. I cannot recommend him enough.
I've known Joe for three years and can attest to his enthusiasm for both maths and philosophy, and to his ability in explaining concepts in both subjects. He is also very sensitive to the needs of his audience, being able to tailor to their prior knowledge and abilities, and he is always willing to be helpful. Highly recommended.
