About Ruben
I studied English at the University of Oxford and later completed an MA in Film and Screen Studies with Distinction. I achieved three A*s at A-Level and Grade 9/9 at GCSE English Language and Literature, and self-taught Film Studies at GCSE and A-Level. Experienced in writing, editing and copywriting. I am able to offer my students valuable knowledge and skills in reading and writing across a number of GCSE and A-Level specifications.
I offer online tuition in GCSE English, A-Level English Literature, GCSE/A-Level Film Studies and University Admission, including Oxbridge preparation. Having attained the top band outcome in the Oxford entrance exam, I am also able to offer coaching for Oxbridge entrance exams.
Passionate and motivated, I am dedicated to the principle that all students have the capacity to be successful. Whether they're striving to gain a Grade 4/5 at GCSE or top grades at GCSE or A-Level, I believe success is the outcome of a shared goal between tutor and student. Education should be inspiring, collaborative and shaped by pedagogical principles that allow students to engage with the process of learning. Outcomes are not just numbers, they are manifestations of a positive learning process.
With this in mind, I believe it's essential that students are able to experience ownership of the learning process. I not only strive to build knowledge and skills essential to positive outcomes, but confidence in my students.

About the lesson

Lessons are mainly delivered online on Google Meet, using shared resources from Google Classroom. Alternative platforms, including Zoom, can also be arranged.
The introductory free lesson is 45 minutes. Later lessons are typically 60 minutes long, although shorter and longer lessons can be arranged where necessary.
Lessons are aimed at GCSE and A-Level students at all levels, whether working towards exams or university admissions, including Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities. University admission coaching involves support with personal statements, interview preparation and entrance exams.
My academic experience and research into effective pedagogical practice taught me that lasting progress comes not just from memorising material, but from collaborating with students to make complex ideas legible and meaningful. For this reason, lessons combine open conversation, analysis, and past-paper practice to make challenging ideas familiar and student progress easy to measure.
We establish long-term learning goals during the free 45-minute taster lesson. We begin with an informal discussion of the student’s objectives before exploring a text, concept or topic of their choice.
We normally begin lessons with a short recap of previous material, followed by small starter activities to build confidence. These include open-ended discussion questions and close-reading of key quotations.
As students progress, lessons introduce more formal work. These include practice past-paper exam questions, both in class and as homework, accompanied by constructive weekly feedback, helping parents and students measure confidence and progress over the term.
I also offer pre-exam walkthrough sessions: these typically happen within 24 hours of an exam, and are structured around a session involving the paper the student is about to be assessed on. These sessions remind students how their learning fits the exam paper, reinforce prior learning, and orient them in a calm and thoughtful way on the eve of their exams.
I adapt lessons to each student’s needs, whether that involves working at a slower pace, using visual prompts, or providing extra time for essay practice responses. Parents/Guardians are also welcome to observe online lessons.
