About Philippa
I am an Oxford-educated scientist with more than ten years of tutoring experience. I hold a DPhil from the University of Oxford, where my research focused on optical sensing, as well as an MSc and a first-class integrated Master’s degree in Physics.
Since 2015, I have taught Physics and Maths to students in the UK and internationally, from GCSE and A-level through to undergraduate study. I have worked with students who need to rebuild their confidence, ambitious pupils aiming for the highest grades, and applicants preparing for academically competitive university courses.
I have first-hand experience of the Oxbridge tutorial system and the standard of independent thinking expected at a highly selective university. Oxford tutorials require students to explain their reasoning, respond thoughtfully to unfamiliar questions and defend their ideas—not simply reproduce rehearsed answers. I bring this approach to my teaching while maintaining a patient, encouraging and accessible style.
Alongside subject tuition, I offer specialist support services for students applying to Oxbridge and other competitive universities. This can include developing their academic profile, refining their reasons for choosing a subject, strengthening their UCAS responses and practising the kind of analytical discussion required during subject-based interviews. I help each student identify their strongest evidence, communicate their ideas clearly and present an application that remains genuinely their own.

Every student begins with different strengths, gaps and ambitions. I therefore aim to tailor my lessons rather than following a standard script. I start by establishing the student’s current level and objectives. We then agree clear priorities and develop a structured plan for progression. Lessons combine careful explanation, guided problem-solving, examination question practice that test whether the student can apply an idea independently. The process will be interactive and designed to deliver pertinent material step-by-step without assuming knowledge, or taking giant and poorly explained 'leaps of faith'.
My teaching is particularly suited to students who:
• Want to improve their performance at GCSE or A level
• Are targeting the highest grades in Physics or Maths
• Need clearer explanations or stronger foundations
• Want to become more confident with unfamiliar problems
• Are preparing for Physics, Natural Sciences, Engineering or another quantitative university course
• Are considering Oxford, Cambridge or another competitive university

Details
My standard rate is £50 per hour for GCSE and A-level tuition. University-level tuition and specialist admissions support are priced according to the level of preparation required.
For Oxbridge and other competitive university applicants, I also offer structured programmes covering academic development, UCAS application responses and subject-focused interview preparation. These programmes begin with an initial assessment and a clear preparation plan; please contact me to discuss the most appropriate form of support.
If you need to cancel or re-arrange your session at least 24hrs notice is required. Arrangements for students located further afield can be discussed. Travel is chargeable at the standard rate - 45p/mile.
