About Phuc

Hi! I’m Phúc, a native Vietnamese speaker from HCM City (Saigon). I hold a Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the University of Canberra (Australia) and have experience teaching Vietnamese to foreigners and English to Vietnamese learners. Before becoming a language teacher, I worked in logistics at international companies for several years. (I also hold a Bachelor's degree in Economics)

With a background in international business and education, I bring both academic expertise and real-world insight to my lessons. I’ve tutored Vietnamese and English for some years, helping learners build confidence in daily conversations and workplace settings. My goal is to help you communicate naturally and enjoy the beauty of the language and culture.

My students describe me as a patient and dedicated teacher. I want my students to learn effectively, so you may find I ask you to repeat words or sentences several times until they sound clear to Vietnamese listeners, unless you prefer otherwise. I always appreciate feedback from my students to improve my teaching.

What I offer in my Vietnamese lessons:
- Every lesson is customised to fit your goals and learning style.
- I’ll help you improve your four skills, pronunciation, and daily conversation fluency.
- I focus on the topic-based approach and the conversational approach: every lesson, we can choose one topic in daily life or work to learn new words and practice speaking and listening. I create a context in which you can imagine you are talking to your family, colleagues, or friends. Topics are varied, including food, drinks, cooking, restaurants, travelling, culture, the workplace- you name it.
- I provide new words and sentences that native speakers use in daily conversations. Then, I encourage you to build sentences, of course, with my help.
- For children, I often use games, such as vocabulary games, to encourage their involvement and engagement.
- Each lesson lasts 1 hour, including: 15 minutes to warm-up (updated about what we've been doing, it's like Vietnamese talk with each other when they meet) and review the previous lesson, 30 minutes to learn new content, and 15 minutes to recap and practice.

- I often ask my students if they have any questions, and I'm happy to answer or clarify. So, please feel free to ask me any questions.

I always encourage my students to speak confidently, don't be shy. Don't worry about mistakes. Mistakes help you improve. We speak English with lots of mistakes, too. Especially, don't worry about grammar. Grammar in Vietnamese is simple compared to English grammar. Vocabulary, pronunciation, and intonation are more important. Let's focus on those. If you speak with grammatical mistakes, but correct words, we can still understand.

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I grew up in Vietnam, so Vietnamese is my native language. Teaching it allows me to share not only the language but also the culture with friends from around the world.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would like to name Uncle Hồ (Hồ Chí Minh) as a figure who represents the resilience and wisdom of Vietnamese culture, values that are also reflected in the language.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

I love the saying “không có việc gì khó, chỉ sợ lòng không bền” which means “nothing is difficult if you stay determined”. It’s a great reminder that persistence is the key to mastering Vietnamese.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Vietnamese is my mother tongue, and teaching it helps me preserve the culture while giving learners a deeper connection to the country.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The tones are the main challenge. A different diacritic on the same word can completely change its meaning. However, regular practice with a native speaker quickly helps learners gain confidence.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Helping my adopted Australian grandma with her Vietnamese was a turning point for me. She was eager to communicate with local people, and I patiently guided her through pronunciation and tones. Seeing her progress and happiness inspired me to become a Vietnamese teacher, so I could share that same joy of learning with many more people.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I have traveled to different regions throughout Vietnam, such as Hanoi, Nha Trang, and the Mekong Delta. Each place has its own accent and expressions, and experiencing these variations has deepened my understanding of the language, which enriched my knowledge and helps me teach learners about Vietnam’s linguistic diversity.
