About Emily
I began playing the cello when I was just four years old, and am now pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in cello performance at the University of Minnesota, where I study with internationally renowned cellist Matt Haimovitz. I received a Bachelor of Music in cello performance from Texas Christian University and a Master of Music in cello performance from UW-Madison, with additional graduate studies at the University of Denver, where I became certified in Suzuki cello teaching and held a graduate teaching assistantship in music theory.
I am an orchestral cellist, chamber musician, recitalist, and teacher in equal measure. As an orchestral musician, I have been principal cellist of several different orchestras, including the TCU Symphony, the Denver Chamber Orchestra, the Atlantic Music Festival Orchestra, and the Madison Gamer Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, I have worked with many different instruments to create unique and innovative sounds and collaborations, most notably as one half of the Short Change Duo—we are a bassoon/cello duo currently working on our first studio album. As a teacher, I have worked with students of all ages, levels, and abilities, taught masterclasses, coached chamber music, and adjudicated solo and ensemble district festivals.
In teaching, I strive to create an open and welcoming studio environment, knowing from personal experience how exposing it can feel to present your ability and your art to another person. It is my hope that students come away from lessons feeling hopeful and inspired, not intimidated or depressed. I expect students to practice and prepare as necessary, but I always stress the health and wellbeing of the student above all else, helping find reasonable and healthy practice habits and giving advice to help prevent injuries that can plague cellists.

I believe it is my role as a teacher to help my students develop into healthy, independent, and well-rounded cellists. To that end, I focus on a holistic approach that incorporates the intertwining of physical, analytical, and emotional aspects of making music to help my students realize their full potential as a cellist, understanding that each student has different needs as an individual in each of these respective areas.
The physical aspect of playing includes technical ability on the instrument, as well as playing with a healthy and relaxed setup, eliminating unnecessary tension whenever possible. I emphasize the importance of scales, etudes, and the technical exercises of past pedagogues such as Feuillard, Duport, Sevcik, and Popper. These fundamentals are the toolbox that allow us to explore more sounds, colors, and interpretations in our greater journey of making music.
In incorporating the analytical aspects of musicmaking, I hope to help my students find a love of the music they are playing apart from the separate love of playing their instrument. This includes incorporating singing and music theory where necessary, as well as fostering their inquisitiveness, both welcoming questions and asking questions of my students. These bigger picture ideas draw on the foundational knowledge of how to play the cello in order to create a thoughtful, sensitive interpretation of any individual piece my student learns.
Whether a student approaches me as a total beginner, a self-taught cellist, or someone with years of lessons and experience, I aim to meet that student where they are, help identify any short and long-term goals, whether that is a specific piece they want to play or preparing for a community orchestra audition, and help the student meet those goals, regardless of age or experience.
