About Tiara
I am a student at the University of Waterloo studying English Language and Literature with minors in Philosophy and Classics. Upon admission to this university, I graduated with an academic average above 95%. I have experience with the High School curriculum for English as well as most Humanities and Social Sciences.
I have worked with children of elementary age in the past, both to tutor and to nurture English as a second language. When working with younger age groups I believe in making learning enjoyable and, consequentially, it becomes more motivating and memorable. I have worked with High School students as well, to deepen their understanding of the material and to prepare for examinations or culminating projects.

I believe that every student is different, and I work to accommodate individual needs. After performing an assessment to determine skill level, I will be able to customize my lessons to ensure that every student has a clear path to improvement.
Using skills such as analyzing texts through close reading, I help the students break down what a piece of writing is trying to communicate, and why that matters. I believe that the study of English can be enlightening and I hope to instill an appreciation for it in every student I work with.
When teaching Ancient languages, I want to honour the text that the student is learning with (if it is an effective tool) while offering explanations of grammar, passages, and vocabulary. I also believe it is important for students to read a wide variety, so using additional adapted texts I can help the student begin to read passages that are not found in their textbook.

Details
I am offering the first 30-minute session for free so that we can get to know each other, and for me to gauge skill level. In this session we will discuss your interests, why you want tutoring, and what specifically you would like help with. I will also offer some information about me, my journey through school, and my educational background. Then, we can both decide if this will be a good fit for us, and continue on from there!
My rates are based on the minimum wage in Ontario, and I hope you find them fair. If for some reason there is an issue with the rate, feel free to reach out and we can discuss.
