About Mark
I am deeply passionate about mathematics, which I have been studying for 11 years. I am also equally (if not more) passionate about finance and economics which I have been studying for three years each. I love challenging myself and tackling new and difficult problems to see how far I can push my mind. I have worked with a variety of students in the past, from first graders to freshmen, and, as a high schooler myself can relate to the difficulties of staying committed to and consistent with grueling and abstract subjects like math or economics. I have wanted to drop math altogether, sometimes feeling as though I'm just not able to understand the teacher no matter how hard I try to listen. Through perseverance, a steadfast goal, and enough courage to seek out help when I most needed it, I was able to overcome temporary ruts and ultimately succeed in my aspirations. That experience taught me to be able to meet a struggling student where they are - because I've been there myself.

My lessons are targeted towards curious elementary, middle, and early high schoolers who desire to build their mathematical and financial foundation. As an honors student with a 4.0 GPA, I am able to efficiently help those struggling with school math, economics, or finance, as well as extracurricular math or personal/academic financial literacy. I use scaffolding to break down complexities of a given topic into manageable steps that allow students to easily see how each digestible piece connects to the bigger picture. I also adapt to the learning style of my students, tailoring my lessons to accommodate students' preferences by including visual aids, verbal discussion, and hands-on activities. My lessons typically start with a warm-up problem which addresses the concept of the session in its simplest form. I then transition to solving problems of increasing difficulty, stopping halfway through the lesson to address any questions or concerns my student might have. Moving through to the end of the lesson, I spend significant time focusing not only on the errors made by the student, but the underlying conceptual misunderstandings that cause the errors. By understanding the conceptual foundation of a given topic, a student builds the necessary skills to tackle ANY problem related to the topic, which I emphasize above all else in my lessons. Throughout all my lessons, I teach following one key principle: explaining WHY the math works in addition to HOW it works makes the difference between a teacher that merely covers material, and one who changes how a student actually thinks.
