Tailored to your needs, we can cover content and methods to remember or understand, identify how to approach questions, or develop exam technique and confidence. Whether you want a deeper understanding of the subject, are aiming for the highest grades, or simply want to learn enough to succeed in the exam and move on, lessons can be adapted to your goals. I place a strong emphasis on communication so that lessons suit the way you learn best, and I am always flexible in adjusting the pace, structure, and focus of sessions.
For online lessons, a method that has worked particularly well in the past is using a blank PowerPoint as a starting point. Rather than simply presenting completed notes, we build the lesson together by adding key information, explanations, diagrams, examples, and exam tips as we go. This allows students to actively engage with the content, ask questions, and develop a clearer understanding instead of passively reading through information. I will annotate the slides during the lesson to highlight important points, common mistakes, useful ways to remember concepts, and links between different areas of the topic.
After each session, I provide the completed annotated PowerPoint so students have a personalised set of notes to review afterwards. This is especially useful for revision, as it contains not only the required knowledge but also the explanations, examples, and exam techniques discussed during the lesson.
Lessons will usually include a balance of explanation, questioning, worked examples, and independent practice. Once a concept is understood, we can apply it to exam-style questions, breaking down the steps needed to reach the answer and building confidence with unfamiliar problems.
The level of challenge can also be adapted depending on the student and the topic. If a student is confident with a concept, we can move beyond the basics and explore more challenging theoretical questions that develop deeper understanding and stretch their thinking. However, if a topic is less familiar or confidence is lower, we can focus on building exam confidence by looking closely at mark schemes, understanding how questions are written, identifying key command words, and learning exactly what is required to gain marks. This helps students approach exams with a clear strategy rather than relying on guesswork, while gradually building their knowledge, confidence, and independence.
