About Emily
Hi students and parents, I'm Emily and I'm going into my second year at Durham University. I'm an extremely dedicated student, achieving straight 9s at GCSE, and three A*s at A-level, and I've learnt through experience that the difference between a good grade and a great one is down to strategy and targeted exam technique, and hope to share my knowledge and resources with others!
I've always had a strong passion for chemistry, but it is a very challenging subject - important for every GCSE student but especially those on a path towards science and medicine.
Unfortunately, students misunderstanding fundamental concepts due to teaching which doesn't align with their learning styles, and intense exam pressure, can derail a student's confidence, and cause them to lose marks which can be avoided through careful learning.
I want to teach because I enjoy turning the frustrations in chemistry into something interesting and enjoyable, where students feel supported and able to reach their full potential, and allow students to unlock the highest grades they can.

When tutoring I prioritise understanding my student, their preferred learning styles, and their specific needs within the subject. Everyone learns differently and I am more than happy to adjust and create resources to tailor to my students, and give personalised pacing.
It is essential to form a 'bond' with my students!
Chemistry is challenging and I always focus on making my student feel comfortable making mistakes, and feel no pressure going over topics as many times as they need to understand a concept.
As someone who approached GCSE, A-Level, and University exams very tactically to achieve the highest grades, I have a strong background in exam technique and studying effectively using targeted learning, revision, and active recall.
Lessons will include using resources which make chemistry most enjoyable to learn about, using visual tools such as screen-sharing images, drawings, and videos.
My methodology involves setting realistic targets through structured planning which aligns with exam boards. Then I identify weaker topics and provide the student with a fundamental understanding which they are able to explain to me in their own words without me just giving them the answer.
This is followed by providing the student with resources to actually practise their understanding and store it in their long-term memory, such as through flashcards, blurting and mind-maps. This will then allow us to apply their learning to exam questions and papers, where I go through exam-mistakes and give key feedback.
These lessons are targeted at GCSE level and KS3 students.
